Learn about Bathtubs

For people who enjoy taking long, relaxing soaks in a bathtub, choosing the right one is extremely important. Bathtubs have changed over the years, offering different styles and types that are often irresistible. Nowadays, bathtubs are made out of a variety of materials, but the most popular bathtubs are made out of acrylic or fiberglass because they are easy to clean. There are two main styles for a bathtub as well -- western or eastern. A western-style bathtub is a bathtub that is long and shallow, which is perfect for individuals who love to soak, whereas an eastern-style bathtub is made so that the bather can sit up. There are a few tub categories to choose from such as a recessed, corner, freestanding, whirlpool, platform or a bathtub/shower combination.

A recessed bathtub is a tub that has one finished side that shows and is bordered by three other sides by the bathroom wall, whereas a corner bathtub has one finished side and one finished end so that it fits in the corner. These types of bathtubs are ideal for a smaller bathroom because they don't take up as much space.

A freestanding tub is similar to the old fashioned claw foot tub, being finished on all sides and it can be placed anywhere in your bathroom. Claw foot tubs are still readily available but for individuals who are looking for a more modern design, a soapstone bathtub is a great option.

Another type of bathtub is a platform tub. These type of bathtubs do not have any finished sizes and are often placed into a structure and can be placed anywhere within your bathroom. Quite often the platform is made out of stylish tiles but you can customize the platform to match your décor.

Whirlpool bathtubs are quite heavy so you will need to make sure your bathroom floor can handle roughly 40 pounds or more of pressure per square inch. Whirlpool bathtubs can come in a variety of styles, types, sizes and colors and are perfect for individuals who want a little bit of luxury in their own home.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • I'm thinking about buying a vintage style soaking tub, but am not sure if a modern soaking tub would be better. Is there a difference?

There is only slight difference between a vintage and a modern soaking tub. In terms of water volume or how much they hold, they are pretty much the same. However, old-fashioned tubs do not often come with a non-slip surface, so that's something you should consider. The difference is slight, so the ideal thing to consider is the décor of your bathroom and if a vintage or modern soaking bathtub will look the best.

  • I have recently had back surgery and am looking to find a whirlpool bathtub that will potentially help soothe my body. What kind of jets will work best?

Whirlpool tubs come with a variety of different jetted features and various types of massage. If you plan on soaking in a whirlpool tub for a decent period of time you should consider a bathtub that features arm rests and handles for added comfort. As far as jets, the air/water combination comes highly recommended.

  • What is an air massage bathtub?

A plain whirlpool bathtub pushes water through the jets whereas an air massage bathtub pushes air from the bottom of the tub. Air massage tubs bath are considered more sanitary because the water isn't being recycled through the pump. These type of bathtubs will surround your body with air bubbles as well.

How to Shop for Bathtubs

There are plenty of things that you need to consider when shopping around for a new bathroom such as the cost, how large you'd like your new bathtub to be, the style and what kind of materials you'd like it to be made out of. Bathtubs can be purchased for $200 USD and up, but you will need to consider that the installation of the bathtub will add more money to the price tag.

You will also need to consider the type of bathtub that would be your top pick such as a jetted bathtub, a recessed tub that is enclosed by three walls, a corner bathtub with two walls or even a freestanding tub, which is like the older clawfoot bathtub. There are also more modern tubs that sit on a platform. These particular bathtubs are perfect for individuals who enjoy immersing themselves in tub, giving them the luxury of a spa. All of these tubs are great choices, so which one you decide upon depends on the style of your existing bathroom, or how you'd like your new bathroom to look.
