In the summer of 2003, Win Butler, Regine Chassagne, Richard Parry, Tim Kingsbury, and William Butler formed the Arcade Fire. The experimental indie rock quintet released a self-titled EP later that year. Soon after, they signed with the label Merge Records and started working on their first studio album. Arcade Fire's debut album Funeral arrived in September 2004 to almost unanimous commercial and critical acclaim.
