MapSource 24K TOPO- National Parks series of CD-ROMs!
24K TOPO is designed to provide interactive viewing of detailed topographic maps. 24K TOPO is vector-based and provides outdoor enthusiasts with innovative object oriented-cartography. Descriptive details for features typically found on topographic maps can easily be viewed with a simple key press. Cursor movements over the map provide descriptions for topographic contours, trail names, summit elevations, points of interest information and much more. The user has the ability to pre-plan their daily adventures from the comfort of their own home, using MapSource on the PC. Then they can download waypoints, routes and tracks to their Garmin GPS, including units that don't accept map data! This new cartography will provide recreational backpackers, experienced and novice hikers alike, and general outdoor enthusiasts with terrific topographic detail needed for their individual journeys. The topographic data is comparable to the 1:24,000 scale paper maps provided by the United States Geological Survey, which is the most detailed topographic data available.

"Just wanted to update on my product code issue I mentioned in my review. Garmin eventually got back to me. Turns out v3 (which is what is shipping now) doesn't require you to register or unlock it - even though the printed and on-line directions state you do. If you just run the installer and skip the unlock step it will function just fine. I'm still incredibly frustrated that this wasn't mentioned anywhere in the product materials or on-line help. Also, for this product, You have to install it on a PC first before transferring it to a Mac w/the bobcat software. Everything is working fine now for me once it got installed. Good quality maps, works well with my Legend HCx. I would have given it 5 stars if not for the confusion earlier."

"This software will place over 1000 7.5 USGS Quad maps as the basemap on your Garmin GPS receiver (I am using the west version). I am using this on the GPSmap 60CSx and the maps are incredible! 40 foot contour lines are marked in light grey with darker gray on larger intervals, trails are show and clearly visible in dased light red lines, lakes/streams in blue, and even seperate background colors for glaciers, marsh areas, etc. (Another review indicated the same color was used for trails and contour lines - this must vary by receiver). I compared in detail the printed USGS maps with those that appear on the GPS and the accuracy is perfect. Even better on the GPS - you can zoom in and out and moving the cursor around shows elevation (you can now even calibrate the GPS altimter with map elevation data)."

"Used in Arches on day trips simply to use it. Used in backpacking trips in Canyonlands and the Grand Canyon too. 95%+ accurate. On one trail in Arches we found that it did not exactly follow the given trail. Used solely in 3 day trip down the west rim of the GC because I lost the topo on the decent. Helped us navigate out of the campgrounds where there are multiple trails but only one leads where you want it to and it is too hot to make mistakes."

"I haven't even been able to use this. To use the map you have to unlock it before you can transfer it to your gps unit. The instruction manual says in the box there will be either a 25 digit "unlock code" or a trifolded paper with an 8 digit "coupon" code. My box didn't contain either one. The online unlock program says there will be an 8 digit "product code" used to unlock it either on the back of the cd jewel case or on the back of the box. My jewel case doesn't have a code, and neither does the box. How many ridiculously complicated system do they have? And why all this conflicting info? After I shell out [$] it shouldn't be this hard to use. Garmin support is unresponsive. Have yet to get any help with this from them. I am so disappointed at the moment. Seriously Garmin. Is peaving off the customers of your high priced hardware units and expensive map software really worth all this copy protection? The only thing I'm happy about is that they now have Mac software (project bobcat), so I supposedly won't have to go over to my buddy's house and use his pc just to load maps if this thing ever decides to work."
