I get coffee ready the night before each day of work. I use the pre-program set time. Because it takes a little longer to grind and brew, I recently set the timer for 5min earlier so I can drink coffee right away and not scare the cats when the grinding occurs. This is such a huge improvement over a much more expensive grind and brew Cuisinart with thermal pot (which didn't keep coffee hot) and was miserable to clean. I like this much better. I'm glad I listened to my brother who encouraged me to take back the Cuisinart and start over. Read more

The broken latch on the grinder area is a much-commented upon issue. I have two units (the oldest is about 6 years old), and have not had this issue. I noticed that as the unit got older, the grind-basket needs extra "incentive" to sit into its sleeve. If the basket doesn't go all the way into the sleeve, and you try to force the cover down, the cover would probably break.

My suggestion would be, if you close the cover and it doesn't catch immediately, open the cover back up and nudge the grind-basket a little lower in its sleeve.

Hope this helps.

BTW, I just contacted Melitta and this unit (and the larger one with the weather station) have been discontinued. They said they are negotating with a new manufacturer, and should have a new type unit sometime in 2010. I don't know if they still have replacement parts, but if you want any, I wouldn't wait to contact them. Read more

If you prefer a machine that freshly grinds the beans for you, this coffee maker is the best. I've purchased various machines that grind the beans and then begin to brew the coffee but there are inherent problems.

The first is that typically the grinds have to be moved from the grinder to the brewer basket. It's almost impossible for all the grinds to make it, thus leaving you with weaker coffee. The second problem is that often times the grinding mechanism gets moist from the brewing process and then the beans REALLY don't completely transfer from the grinder into the brewer.

With this machine, the grinding takes place inside the metal brew cup so no transfer of grinds is necessary. With the beans being ground inside the brewing mechanism, all of the grinds make it into the pot. The only thing I would recommend is that when you insert the brew cup, you make sure it is dry. If it's dry, the ground beans don't stick to even the walls of the brew cup. They settle to the bo

I'm from Seattle (enough said?), frequented coffee houses in the Bay Area and lived in Japan, where coffee can be an art (surprised?), so I am more than a bit picky about coffee. I paid my dues and went through a number of brands and models of grind and brew coffeemakers, along with coffee presses, vacuums (siphons), and toddy makers. Melitta is THE best hands down! I gave away most of the other brands after one or two uses. The easy to use grind level selector is fabulous and the secret to a really satisfying cup of brewed coffee. Yes, the lid closure is weak, but I took minimal care on the second Melitta unit and it lasted 4 years (of heavy use) before I passed it on for another year of use! I have the new Smart Mill and Brew unit and LOVE it just as much. My office even adopted a Melitta for their coffee mess! Can't say enough about them, and hope they never stop making them! Read more

This coffeemaker was a premium award from a credit card company and I was not certain I wanted a mill & brew coffee maker. However, I have been using it for four months now and have only high praise for its ease of use and the resulting coffee it produces. My one complaint might be that the heating element only stays on for one hour after making the coffee. I would prefer a little longer, but that is no reason for not selecting this coffee maker. I love it. Read more
