Great basic navigation

Pros: In my work I am often required to travel to places I’ve never so much as heard of on very short notice. I have owned my Tomtom One for several months now and it has yet to let me down. Both the visual and audio turn-by-turn directions are clear and easy to follow. If you make a wrong turn, within seconds the unit recalculates the route to get you to your destination. When it first arrived, as a test, I asked it to navigate me to several destinations I knew well. I was pleased to find that the vast majority of the time Tomtom took me along the same route I would have chosen as a “local” - maybe not the most obvious route but probably the smartest route. The price is low but there’s nothing cheap about it. Of course, it doesn’t play mp3s and videos or display my digital photos but I don’t want it to - I have separate devices that do those things better. Cons: Tomtom is a European product and it shows if you want to take advantage of the “Plus” features or additional downloads.

I picked Tom Tom because it had the LEAST number of bad reviews, and I wanted to pay a little more to get above the cheapest models which gave users the poorest performance.

My standard had been Magellan, after first using it in a rental car back in the 1990s, but poor reviews have changed my mind about the Magellan models (at least for the lower end units).

I think you can't go wrong with this Tom Tom series. This model is well-made and easy to set up. I was using this literally right out of the box. I opened it in the parking lot and drove from Daytona Beach to Jacksonville (Florida) without any problems.

The maps are up-to-date and you get a year of free Tom Tom updates and probably forever use of the user-fixed maps, which you update by linking to your Internet-connected PC via the included USB cable.

You can customize voices, map colors, points-of-interest, etc.

I don't know how to tell where the battery indicator is, but I keep it plugged in to the cigarette lig

This is the 4th TomTom that I've owned. I still own 3, but one of them was stolen. [$] is a fantastic deal for the TomTom One, especially since it comes with the "latest map guarantee". 3 of them have been refurbished with no porblems. I've been using this refurbished one from Radio Shack for a week now with no problems at all. The free map upgrade wouldn't work automatically when following the instructions that came with the unit [...]Hints: If you have other TomToms you can save the favorites to your PC and then load them onto the new TomToms rather than having to reenter them. That way your favorites are on all of your TomToms, which for me is important with 5 drivers depending on them all the time, with lots of destinations\favorites. Note that you will need to reload the favorites everytime you update the maps. Also, if you connect the GPS to your computer and log in to TomTom home every now and then the GPS will find the sattelites quicker becasue TomTom will "tell" the GPS w

I bought Mio C320 and Tomtom one 3rd edition from RadioShack, and C220 from Circuit City.Overall of Mio C320 and C220:Great units! Highly recommended! Maps like FINE ARTS with just adequate roads and texts. Easy to use. I can easily set my new routes while I am driving. Two great and very easy to-use features while driving: tap on the screen to overview the big area around you and tap back to normal, and put your finger on the map to move it around. They are very helpful when the traffic slows down and you need to find an alternative route.Compare Mio C320 with C220:Mio C320: Wide screen, means more info on the screen and less chance to tap the wrong spot when you working on the touch screen.Mio C220: The speed of your car is displayed only when you drive freely without setting a route.Overall of Tomtom One 3rd Edition:Not recommended. Maps look awful after you are spoiled with Mio’s fine-arts maps. Difficult to use. You can’t tap on the screen to overview the map and you need

        spartanburg, SC

I used it to find about a dozen destinations. 3 or 4 it brougt me almost right to the door. 2 Were not on the map. 2 or 3 were within a block. 2 were on the wrong side of the street. 2 were more than a block but less than 1 mile off. And one brought me down a mud farm tractor road through a cow pasture when there was a perfectly good paved road one turn down.

Pros: I was impressed by the clarity of the screen.
Had no problems with screen lag.
Directions updated quickly.

Cons: Street addresses were way off.
Didn't always give the best rout. - Like haveing me drive all the way around a the back side of a huge shopping center and through the back truck entrance.
POI's are very incomplete. Sitting less than a block from McDonalds. Find the nearest McDonalds. It has us drive by the closest one a go 8 miles down the road.
Lots of U turns built into the rout. Read more

I like how it announces streets and the next turn after that. I like how it maps routes. It has many nice extra features that you have to pay more for in other brands. It has on 2 occasion told me to turn on a one way street, Some POI that were not there anymore. Both having to do with updates, not the unit itself. Long trips I have planned out better on paper because I could combine fastest route and shortest route, which you can't do with this gps. This unit is best for across town routing. Read more

I am really liking my TomTom - it's given me a lot of confidence on the road. I'm fairly new to my area and don't know all the streets yet - and this has really helped get me around and teach me new ways to go. I no longer feel intimidated by driving in unfamiliar areas - I know the TomTom will always get me back home.

Things I like about it: it has tons of points of interest (my Mom and I found her bank's ATM in a gas station, for example - we would never have found it otherwise); the display is easy to see and understand; the voice is easy to hear and understand; it's lightweight (I can carry it in my purse); easy to insert on the suction cup device; the touchscreen is easy to use; it's user-friendly in that I really didn't need the manual to understand how to do stuff on it.

Things I don't like: it doesn't say the street name (however, the display is so clear about what street you turn on, I've not had a problem there); sometimes there's issues with detail at the end of your journ

The TomTom One 3rd edition in my opinion is better for a paper weight than to get you to where you need to go. I took a little venture trip to see how it worked, as I have used another brand before and loved it, I started to notice that streets that have not existed for 5 or more years are still on the unit. Streets that have been built 6 years ago are not on the unit. So I went home and tried to update and it updated. So I took another trip around the city, and nothing had changed. I tried updating again, and noticed that I would have to pay $89.00 to update the unit fully. Needless to say I have returned the unit and now have a Garmin, which is fully updated. Read more

I have been a daily GPS user since 1999 when the first Garmin GPS' were $599 and didn't include any type of street level maps and auto routing. I have used them all including GPS software on laptops, on PDA's with bluetooth GPS receivers etc etc and this is handsdown one of the best I have used yet. I even owned the "better" Tom Tom ONE XL and got rid of it and kept this version because it is so small and compact. You DO NOT want to leave ANY GPS mounted on your dash or windscreen if you leave your car for even 5 minutes. I ALWAYS for years remove mine as soon as I get out of car and I have never had a break-in. You WILL get your car window broken eventually if you leave it mounted. Guaranteed...This one is so convenient to unclip and throw into the glove box or even slip into your pants pocket and use while walking around a new city. TIP. To protect it for cheap, buy a pair of babies socks in whatever cool color or design you want and slip the GPS into the sock for protective coverin
