Beware of the PEARL!

Our first Pearl froze on the first day, so we took it back to the store and exchanged it. Our second PEARL lasted about a week, then it too froze up. First, it would play only a couple songs, then quit. Then, it quit altogether and now it only comes up with the display "PEARL", and will not boot up. As for connecting it to the computer, no system in our house will bring it up on the USB: They all recognise it as a PEARL mass storage device, but none of our XP machines can boot it up as a removable hard drive. Thus, our second PEARL is as unusable as the first one. A real disappointment. There appears to be NO helpful troubleshooting information available on the RCA or audiovox website, nor anywhere else that I can find. I can, however, find about a dozen other futile online pleas for help from users with identical trouble. Beware of the PEARL. Read more

I bought two RCA pearls (TH1602) a few weeks ago and they both are working great. I've loaded plenty of MP3 songs using Windows Media Player (WMP) library. I found that WMP works much better than the software RCA included. In actuality, the RCA software works off the WMP library files, so why not use WMP? As far as RCA quality goes, I've dropped mine twice with no ill effects. The player simply shuts down when dropped. So far I've gotten about 25 hours out of my Pearls on one battery. I've reduced the screen saver time and shutdown times, so I may get a few more hours now. I did notice that the Title/Album/Artist/Genre search features on the Pearl work best when those fields are not null for your MP3 files. Overall, feel confident in purchasing an RCA Pearl. Don't buy this!!

Don't buy this if at all possible. I just got it 4 days ago, and it completely stopped working last night. The logo shows up when I turn it on, but it never goes past that. The only way to shut it off now is to remove the battery. It didn't work very well before it conked out though. If I pushed a button after it had been sitting for a while, it would stop playing. I could still go through the menus, but the music wouldn't play, and I couldn't turn it off. I would have to take the battery out, wait at least 5 minutes for it to load again, and go through the same process about 3 times. On my 25 minutes bus ride to work, I listened to maybe 10 minutes worth of music. I thought RCA was a brand I could trust, but I probably won't be buying anything else from them anytime soon. I received this product 4 months ago for Christmas. It seemed to work fine then out of the blue the very next day I used it, it froze. The blue Pearl wording comes up but it is frozen there. It won't initialize and when I try to plug it into the USB Port it will not recognize it due to the frozen issue. Not even trying a different USB port or adding and removing hardware devises. Also the RCA site is extremely hard to get to. Read more
