The device delivers remarkable performance, even support multysystem (PAL, SEKAM & NTSC). This is the only device at the moment that can capture with this level of hardware encoded quality, except for new $115 Blackmagic Design Video Recorder USB Capture Device that I didn't have a chance to test yet although given robust impeccable performance of Black Magic Intensity that I own - I'm sure that is definetely better choice than 1212 HD PVR for capture. 1212 does not work for HTPC because Neither Beyond.TV nor Sage TV nor Vista Media Center nor WinTV(Scheduler only - no one touch record from TV Guide) - support HD input of 1212 at the moment. 1212 comes with rudimentary basic scheduling tool that can swith channel on cable box but fails to record when it wakes PC from Sleep mode. Total Media just drives me mad.For [$] I would expect better bundled software. Now I have to spend another $80 for Beyond TV and even that is not available yet. I've tried Beyond TV with Vista x86, x64 & Windows

This was the clear choice to record Premium HD content and the only product that I could find that did so at the time of purchase.

It will also record Video games and any other media as long as you can use one of the supplied input types.

It will record, play and also allow you to burn your content to BluRay format on a regular DVD, but its not BluRay.

I use this unit to record movies via the timer recording program that is included and store them on a Hard Drive, it would be much better if the unit was compatible with Media Center but its not.

They give you a link to an online program guide service (TitanTV) but that service is way off on the channel lineup so there is a bit of lost functionality there, I submitted several problem reports but they don't help even after a few months.

Zap2it.com is another service that seems to be better with channel lineups.

Some tips for new users:
1) Download the latest drivers before you connect it to your PC and it will work fine.
2) The Opti

hauppauges' 1212 pvr works as advertised, would have given it 5 stars were it not for the fact that the supplied software is somewhat deceiving. total media extreme oem version will not give you all that is needed, at least not for my need. if you already watch blu ray thru your computer, you need to be sure that you are not using arcsofts total media 3 platinum, because according to arcsoft support, you cannot use total media theater 3 and total media extreme at the same time on your computer and the oem version of total media extreme that comes with your 1212 will not play back bluray. However, it does allow you to record to your hdd from your cable box in 1080i with dd 5.1 surround. heres the catch, it won't let you author dvd or bluray in dd5.1, only pro-logic II. Read more

Have been using this unit for about 3 weeks now and has been a pleasant surprise. Works and performs as advertised. It captures AVCHD video in either a TS format or M2TS format. I recommend capturing with TS format as it has a more universal editing format. After loading download the updated drivers from the Hauppauge website so that you can record 5.1 surround Dolby. To record 5.1 audio you must use an optical audio cable (not supplied) but very inexpensive. If you intend to record from sattelite receiver and want to record the broadcast resolution (1080i or 720p), you must change this setting on your sat receiver. The PVR records at the resolution pushed out from your sat box. The bundled software is OK. Could give user a little more control of settings, but it is adequate to record and play back. can only cut recordings at begining and end without losing 5.1 audio which is converted to 2 channel. Cut commercials with H264 Cutter (free download). RECOMMEND. Read more

I have mixed feelings about the 1212. Overall I love it and use it every day. I did have a hard time getting the IR pickup to work with my cable box but after a 10 hr battle it now is programmed and has worked perfectly. Even with all my sleep settings turned off it randomly freezes and fails to record TV shows. The software that comes with it is very basic but gets the job done - other than the TV software. I had to buy Beyond TV software to actually get to the point of scheduled TV recording. I love the 1212 and would reccomend it to anyone but with the warning that it may suck up a lot of your spare time tweaking it! I could give it 5 stars if all the software were a little more polished. Read more
