I was recently in the market for a rototiller, the rear tine tillers were to expensive, and the front tine tillers were to bulky for my liking... I was putting in a small food plot for deer. I came across the ryobi cultivator and it was in my price range, (under $200 dollars) so I bought one.. I got it home and started it up and became very leary about how affective it would be.. It didn't sound very powerful.. but to my suprise it tore through the sod and cultivated every bit as deep as I needed it to.. now I don't know if ryobi would recomend this tool for putting in a food plot, but it worked amazingly.. I am not one to leave reviews but this machine worked so well, and it was so easy to use including the tine removal for cleaning, that I felt that I had to leave a review... I wouldn't think twice about using this cultivator to put a garden in.. from start to finish... This thing is simply amazing... Read more

The Boss (wife!) wanted me to dig up a strip of lawn along side our drive and walk ways to plant flowers in. I resisted the idea for four years, because I knew that it would be a long, back breaking experience. I also knew that a full-sized tiller would do the job quickly, but they were also expensive, and would cut too wide a swath. There were several mini-tillers available, but I "knew" they were too light weight to break through the tough sod and hardpan clay we have here. Finally, she talked me into buying the Ryobi. All the way home, I thought we had wasted our money.

My opinion went up a bit when I assembled the unit. The parts were sturdy, fit well, and assembly was as easy as anybody could ever hope for.

Starting the engine was a bit tricky. I have found that I have to play a bit with the throttle (with the tines raised off the ground) to start easily.

Much to my amazement, the little tiller ripped through the sod like a much heavier model. I was able to prepare the flower b

Aside from the first 3 hours I used it, this product had fatal flaws for me, at least the exact one I bought. At about 4 hours of use on the second day I had it, the engine popped out, the shaft that went from the engine to the gear box snapped in half. This I believe was from the massive vibration to this machine, I'm thinking the lousy design flaws are known by Ryobi because of their desperate attempt to add a pocket in which to add balist of sand to. It's not my intention to smear Ryobi, but they need to recall and redesign this product. It shakes, It jumps and the cover to the air filter kept popping off, although once you get a pair of pliers to crank down the wing nut type screw on it, it happens less. It doesn't start up easily, takes maybe 5-8 pulls to get it working some times, unless it's all ready hot, similiar to other small gas powered engines but I'm pretty sure it's twice as annoying, I own/operate/run a lawn maintenance business. By the way I used this on my lawn, not m

This is the little engine that could. This cultivator does an awesome job at getting down into sod and dirt full of clay and goes to work. This one can do the job that a larger cultivator would normally do but this is a lot easier to handle and store based on it's size. Read more

On the surface this tiller looked to be just the thing I needed for small to medium work around the house and out at my mountain property. Assembled very easily and quickly. On the first day (right out of the box), it started right up and worked great for the 15 minutes I used it (although it dug in better after I added the sand to the plastic bin to weight the front down).
On the following day, it started up and worked just great for about 30 minutes. I turned it off to go in to get a drink of water and now it simply will not start despite many repeated attempts. I don't feel I should have to put myself to the trouble of goofing with the engine on a product that's only been out of the box for a day and a half. So this tiller is going straight back to the store first thing in the morning.
I've seen a number of reviews of this product by folks who've experienced problems starting it after very short periods of use. But I've also seen a good many reviews by buyers who were completely sat
