Fuji misses the mark on this one

Here's the issue. The Fuji F30/31 were awesome cameras for low light, high ISO performance. Fuji tried to continue that into the F40/F45 (both are identical cameras, the latter being exclusive through Ritz). The images, even at the lower ISO's have a texturing due to the heavy noise reduction being applied. Kind of a "painting" effect, and hazy edges. I'm hoping they put out a firmware upgrade to address this. To make this worse, in full "Auto", the camera will default to a high ISO. This really gives an image that leaves much to be desired, with, again, too much noise reduction. However, viewed small, they don't look too bad. Just don't expect to crop the picture much. You'll need the 8 megapixels to print that 4x6. Lots of things to like about the camera, but it's image quality that they get bought for. Read more

good camera for the price

i bought the F45fd to replace my aging canon S410. there was a rebate and a free printer, which made this a great bargain.

overall, i'm happy with the camera. it's light years beyond the S410, and good enough for casual use.

pros: the face detection works nicely. AF is faster than my S410 (not as fast as a DSLR). colors and sharpness are good. high ISO is much cleaner than the S410, but again not as good as a DSLR.

cons: noise reduction is ALWAYS on and pictures have that look you get from heavy-handed NR software. Read more

A follow up to the legendary Fuji F20/30/31 series, while a notch below, the F45 more than makes up with better metering, better LCD, SD compatible, and better ergonomics. The first F Series that's finally sexy!

Image quality is class leading like the previous mentioned F Series with low noise up to ISO 800. Read more

I own two Nikon DSLRs and have been trying to find a small point and shoot that will do what I need it to when I need it to. This fits in my pocket, starts up very quickly, takes wonderful lowlight pictures, excellent party pictures and great landscapes. I'm impressed with every picture, and have had a lot of fun with this little camera. Read more

The Fuji F31fd was great however I hate the xD card. This F45fd is the same as a F40fd which supports SDHC card after the firmware update. The great thing is, Ritzcarmera is selling it at a lower price than other F40fd models.

I use a 8GB SDHC Class 6 card. The high ISO performance may not be as good as F31fd, however once you set the camera with 4M picture quality, ans M mode with Auto ISO (400), the output will be very good.

I have other P&S cameras like Panasonic and Canon models below $300, they cannot compare to the F45fd in picture quality. I have my Pentax DSLR, but it's not always possible to carry it anywhere anytime. So I put the F45fd in my pockets everyday. That feels good.

Did I mention the outdoor pictures very sharp and real? This labor day weekend I used it on my Long Island fishing trip. People saw the pictures and asked me which camera I used, if it is the DSLR. Well, this F45fd is the wonder.

I give it the 4 star rating because of the low light performa
