I wanted to update my Emerson(Funai) EWR20V4 VCR/DVD Recorder because that is 4+ years old and VHS units will disappear in a couple of years, just as LP's, 8 Track and Sony Beta vcr's have gone. I had no problems with the Emerson and the Magnavox is the SAME maker, I figured it is a safe bet. Now that I have used the Magnavox for two months without a problem I can say that it is a good unit to buy. [...]-how could you go wrong?(barring a lemon) I have an old TV and since this has a digital tuner I did not have to buy a converter to receive the new TV signal. I use this to watch the over the air channels using a rabbit ear antenna.Since I accidentally let time pass and could not use the Gov't coupon card,I would have spent $50+ for the converter box anyway. The picture quality is fair/good. Now,the important stuff- Use the Recommended Disc's only! It is Very picky on the disc recording manufacturer. Also, once a Movie, TV Show or personal Cam-Cord recording is copied-this unit will Force

This combo is an excellent value. With the analog to digital TV conversion looming on June 12th, this choice at the Overstock.com price is a no-brainer. Why invest in an analog converter box, when this device will do that and a whole lot more. First of all, the quantity of digital signals that this Magnavox machine (manufactured by Funai Corp.) acquires is greater than what a converter box can get. Secondly, if you own an older analog VCR/DVD device, you're in for an unfortunate surprise when you can't utilize its recording capability the way you may have grown accustomed to. After June 12th, all analog VCR/DVD recorders will not receive digital television transmissions (via a home antenna) without a converter box set up between the antenna and the recorder. If you have such a setup, you'll have to set your analog VCR/DVD recorder to channel 3 permanently, and you'll only be able to "time record" on one channel only (the one that you set the converter box to). In addition, you won't be

I have 10 of this product and it has taken me awhile to learn alot of the ins and outs but as you see with 10 of them I must like them. I also have 3 of the newer one, I like this model the best. I saw where someone had problems with time changing. You have to take the day light savings time off and the auto clock setting to off it it will stop jumping time. I also had problems with the channel going to a high one and when I wanted say channel 3 it would flick back. I use the vcr and I would hit the bottonfor the dvd and change it and then go back to vcr and it would stay. I bought 2 from overstock last week and have hooked up 1 so far and it is wokrking great. Read more

While this will burn a DVD from a VHS tape I found that if I take the DVD to another player it shows me a invalid disc and will not play it. It seems to do a decent job as far as copying to DVD and automatically puts chapters in so you can fast forward through the disc . Both VHS tapes and DVD disc play nicely on this unit so I would recomend it with its limitations on disc playback. With my cable connection I was not able to use the Digital tuner so I cannot recommend on how it works. Read more

I accidentally bought this thinking it was the lower priced model without a digital tuner. I decided to go ahead & keep it. Although it picked up more digital channels than my TV, the picture quality is not as good as the television. I am using S-video and might try component and HDMI to see if it gets better, but I doubt it. DVD player doesn't look razor sharp either. When I tried the VCR, I almost took the unit back to the store. Picture & sound were terrible, but luckily it has manual tracking as well as automatic. After manually adjusting the tracking, it was much better. I got used to the fast rewind of the older VCR's. This one takes quite a bit longer. If you're nuts about an outstanding HD picture, you're not going to be happy with this product. Read more
