This is my first GPS and it is really awesome. I looked far and wide - consumers reports, CNET reviews and opinions, etc. Someone will always say something bad about every model of GPS. I looked at the Magellan brand, and applause to them for linking up with AAA, but the brand overall seemed to have more than its fair share of complaints. The Garmin brand, however, seemed to less than its fair share of complaints. One complaint that stopped me for this model for a second was the lack of a QWERTY keyboard, but that has proved no problem at all. Decided to go with this model of Garmin because it is their most basic one that speaks the street name and that's important to me. The 330c doesn't speak the name, the 340c does. The Garmin website helped me figure this out. I wanted something that offered robust GPS features but without bluetooth or an MP3 player, etc. This one is it! The current price for the C340 is great --- I paid [$] in Jan. 2006. However, buyers beware: Garmin no longer supports this GPS. I wanted to up-date the maps (June 2009). Customer service told me that 1. I had to buy an up-date made for their new line of GPS for [$] (check the current price of the unit) and 2. the up-date would not fit into the memory of the C340. Garmin no longer provided up-dated maps for the Street Pilot. Customer service cheerfully informed me that the solution would be to buy several SD memory cards to which sectional maps of the USA could be downloaded. As I drove from place to place I could insert a new card into the unit. Aside from the inconvenience and awkwardness of carrying a half dozen cards around, their "solution" (I don't think their engineers went to MIT) means that you cannot plot a trip from Washington, DC to Chicago or anywhere else outside the region where you live. I do love my garmin - use with a grain of salt though- does not find new places well, as maps are already outdated when you open it. So best use is with a website of the company to be sure. By that I mean - if you are in orlando and want an outback steakhouse, get on the website, search for the address, and put that into the garmin rather than using the food menu, as it is not updated and may be wrong- has happened to me more than a few times. All in all I love the device- has made my life much easier - no leaving for appointments an extra half an hour early to get lost on the way. Good device - speaks the street name, and can input custom points of interest through your computer, like rest stops and baseball stadiums, both of which I love. Read more

I got the 340 for Christmas, but am just getting around to reviewing it. It's really a great choice, a very good value compared to other models. Works right out of the box--gets me to where i am going everytime. Easy to use with your choice of computerized voices, plus either 2D and 3D views. The 340 even switches automatically to night mode as the sun sets. Loads of useful info and very customizable. My only gripe is with the mounting unit which could be more versatile. Overall, this GPS is a very good buy, I would choose it again as well as recommend it to friends. Read more
