A must-have for charcoal grilling or smoking. Charcoal is ready faster than with starter fluid or newspaper starting, it's cleaner and generally easier. The device and cord is very short for the depth on a large-size Big Green Egg smoker. It's obvious this wasn't designed for the BGE specifically, and that's why my other "con" is a BGE price premium: buy a regular non BGE-branded electric starter. It'll be identical and you'll save a few bucks. I'd like to see one designed to better fit the egg, that's what I assumed I would get. Read more

Most electric charcoal starters have straight, short handles and coils. The Big Green Egg has a very well designed shape so that the hot part of the coil reaches right into the grill, and it has the right bend so that the coil is flat against the grate and you can easily pile briquets onto it. A classic case of good design. If Apple Computer had been into grilling, this is what they would have designed. Read more
