This R22 DirecTV DVR was released earlier this year (2008). It packs essentially the same hardware as the high-definition HR21 DVR, but the R22 has the HD capabilities disabled. This is why the front panel has lights available for 720p and 1080i resolutions, but the R22 will actually NOT output those higher resolutions. Since Best Buy's website already describes some technical specifications, I won't go into detail about these specifications in my review.
This is my first DVR, and at the time of my review, I have only used it for five days with my triple LNB satellite dish. The model that I bought from my local Best Buy store is the R22-100. There is also a R22-200, but the main difference between the two subversions of the R22 is the contract manufacturer who supplied the DVRs to DirecTV.

PROS:
~Installation and setup was easy. I replaced my old DirecTV SD (Standard Definition) receiver with this R22 SD DVR, and activated it while on the phone with DirecTV. Setting up the remote cont

I switched from cable to DTV with DVR (not HD, though). At first it wasn't too bad. Nothing great, but nothing awful. The signal would go out during big rains, big snows, or big winds. Then you have to go through setting up your satellite configuration and waiting while it re-downloads all the information (assuming you can remember what all the settings are supposed to be set to).

We also noticed that when items sat in the recorder for a couple months they begin to degrade. When you watch them they are glitchy and skip forward. Eventually we had a new box put in. That one got worse than the first. Now items that had been in the recorder for just a week or two are already degrading.

The fast-forward and rewind freeze up. You have to hit FF or RW again to speed up, then it leaps forward (or backward) past where you want to go. And the pop-up bar that shows your progress has stopped working along with the FF/RW. It says you're at the beginning of a show even as you're FF'ding, right up

This product is great. I have it on My living room TV. It puts out 480P. I wish it were 480i, but oh well. Other than that that deep black makes the blue halo and power button lights stand out. The unit has HDMI output digital audio output. Two Ethernet plugs telephone input for your caller i.d. I also peeped a SATA plug that I am very interested in. This could be the equivalent of the TiVO's expandable HDD. Not really a problem with the R22 because of the generous Hard drive space. The MPEG 4 on demand Is great as well. If you are reading this, stop, get in the car and go buy it. Read more

I really like the fact that I have only one RG-6 cable to each receiver and can record 2 shows at once while watching a Previously recorded show on the HDDVR (I Bought and Installed my own AU9-SL5-SWM-B1-PWS Five LNB Ka/Ku Slim Line Dish Antenna from Solid Signal ). Set up recordings from work PC or via Blackberry, in case I forget to set up the DVR before leaving home. 1080P. I have it hooked up to the internet and computer and a Sony 920 7.1 Receiver System with Bose Speakers all form Best Buy. I can record VOD Content. I Bought a Western Digital - Caviar GP 1TB Internal Green Hard Drive From Best Buy (120$) and installed it, Now I can record over 250 Hours of HD Content. Life is great.

Great Product by my personal standards€

Even My Wife Loves this Thing :) Read more
