I purchased this GPS after having my Garmin 2000 for only two months. ( It overheated ) My first impression of the Nextar was from it's quality. It feels solid and well built. ( Much better than the Garmin. ) Even the packaging is well designed and marked for recycling. ( Most of the packaging is even rigid cardboard vs. styrofoam - and that's cool ) The unit also comes with a handy pocket sized pouch, so you can listen to your MP3s in your pocket without scratching the screen. A cigarette lighter/ AC plug in charger is included, but you also get a standard charger that you can leave in the house as well.( cool!) The MP3 and picture feature of the unit is a cool plus, but as with most things in life, you get what you pay for. From what I understand, the memory cannot be upgraded on the Nextar, and as a result, picture display from your SD card is SSLLOOWW. At first I thought this was the best ever..but found out after 4 uses that it is not quality at all. The music would not shut off and go back to main menu. I took out the SD card and then hit the reset button because it would not shut off or do anything at all. The reset button did not do anything but bring up the main start page and the status bar would not go further than an 1/8 of the way. I called Nextar tech support which the guy new nothing said that he has not heard of this and to let the battery die and then recharge it and see what happens. If it needs to be exchanged then to call back and it can take 3 to 6 weeks. I purchased this because I am moving East from the Mid-west not a big deal but I wanted to have a GPS that worked. This is a average entry-level navigation unit that differentiates itself with Text-to-Speech capability. Street names are properly pronounced, and the directions are relatively accurate. This is the least expensive unit currently on the market with Text-to-Speech.It does not use the SiRF Star III GPS like other units, but the Centrality Atlas II (which integrates the CPU and GPS on to a single chip), so it is a bit slower to acquire satallite signals compared to the other ones [...] sells.Also, if the environment is too warm, it will freeze. The main reason I bought this GPS was because it had all of the USA & Canada both, which is very hard to find in a GPS at this price. When I attempted to put in any address for Canada I got a fatal error message one time and had to shut the unit off, but since that time I put in Canada address and got the directions no problem. I've only got to use the unit 1 time so far. I put in my work address, of course it told me to go the fastest route it knew but that wasn't necessarily true due to stop lights and such so I went a different route on back roads. It did tell me to make a U-turn at the first chance which I thought was strange. One minor other thing was the voice prompt did not tell you when it was recalculating the route it just said it on the screen which isn't good when your trying to drive but like i said a minor issue I feel. It's a nice looking unit and the screen looks good. The speaker is a bit small and I have not tried playing MP3's on it but I can't imagine them sounding … Read more

What a disapointment. This unit was the right price and came with features usually only found in more expensive units, but it just doesn't work reliably. Sometimes I'm 15 minutes into the trip before it comes to life. Resets only work half the time. It crashes often, has a high tracking lag, and can take 20 seconds to respond to a button click. As of 7/28/07 there are no sofeware or map updates on Nextar's website. Read more
