I Was Truly Surprised

I don't actually own a Blowfish; I borrowed one. It was the first time I used a hydration pack. I can't review the hydration portion because I didn't use the reservoir; I'm not crazy about the concept because they seem to take too much effort to clean, and standard waterbottles are so easy to clean-I just unscrew the top and let them air dry.

What I CAN comment on is the fit and capacity of the Blowfish.

I used this for a one-day, 13 hour bike ride. Here's what I fit in it: various bike tools (except for tubes and tire levers), spare cables, lube, brake pads, chain links and pins, wallet, eyeglasses, two full waterbottles, 2 sandwhiches, 2 PowerBars, a candy bar, tights, armwarmers, two 8oz. cans of soda, and a 20oz. bottle of soda.I removed the reservoir since I wasn't going to use it.

This thing fit so well: it didn't sway when riding out of the saddle, the waist strap is so thin it didn't pinch my waist like my fanny pack does, it had plenty of pockets to organize my stuff,

Having owned 2 Blowfish over the last 7 years I was expecting the same great CamelBak as those. This years Blowfish is significantly smaller then the older models. I tried taking the gear from my old model and moving it over to the new one will little success even with significant repacking. At best I was able to get only 75% of the gear into the new one and the old one wasn't even fully loaded. The 2 outer pockets are only about 1/2 the size of the older models. The lack of the large mesh pocket is a real loss. I'll be returning this Blowfish and search out one of the larger models, maybe a Hawg, but it lacks the pockets that were so helpful on the Blowfish. Perhaps I'll need to seek out other brands. Read more

We've had the camelback blowfish for about 5 years. We chose it because it holds a lot of water and has an adjustible capacity. If we're just carrying water it fits close to the back and is smaller. If we want to stuff sweatshirts, lunch, or dog toys for the river in it it expands to accomodate. We use it on day hikes, when we go to the river with the dogs, on picnics at the park, and when kayaking in our tandem kayak. It's worked great for us. On short trips we can carry just this pack to hydrate two adults and our two dogs. Read more

I went in to my local REI to buy the MULE based on all its good reviews. Once there, however, I debated between the Blowfish, the MULE, and the HAWG since all three were on sale. I decided on the Blowfish because of my intended purpose (mountain biking) and because of its sleeker styling and more minimalist design.

Even though another customer tried to talk me into the MULE (and almost had me convinced), I'm glad I went with the Blowfish. The Blowfish doesn't have all the various outer pockets like the MULE; instead, it keeps gear inside and away from possible snags. As such, the pack sits on the back in a more streamline fashion than the MULE.

I appreciate the expandable main compartment, which has plenty of room for things like a mini-pump (built-in sleeve is great), an extra tube, a basic first-aid kit, and a camera. With the expansion deployed, there's also room for rain gear and a few other items. The two smaller front compartments offer plenty of space for items lik

I have had a Camelbak Blowfish for 4 years now. It is far and away the most used piece of gear I own. It looks like they have made some improvements to the one that I own. Like the air director panel and the better reservoir. One of my favorite features is still there and that is the expandable big pocket. That is so handy. I use it mountain biking, hiking, going to the park, sporting events, and many other ways. Having the expandable pocket allows for customization depending on the use and the logistics of that use. I open it up to add rain gear or food depending on my activities. You wont be disappointed with the blowfish. Read more
