This is a good solution for someone looking for a quick and easy home theater fix. The Onecall price is what sold me. If I had the money, I would have gotten a receiver separate from the speakers. That way, I could have a receiver with true 7.1 surround sound. The way this receiver works is the audio is connected from your source (ie dvd player) via component or optical cable. These connections can only handle 5.1 surround. Since this receiver only has hdmi pass though, none of the audio is transferred to the system speakers via hdmi(only to your television speakers).

Pros: In all, the value of this system is what sold me. The speakers are very good and I liked that it came with an iPod dock and a setup microphone (for calibrating the speakers--saves a lot of time at setup).

Cons: I wish the hdmi wasn't pass-though so that true 7.1 surround could be played. The speakers have an antiquated wall mount and there is no mount option for a ceiling. Also, Onkyo needs to do something a

This unit was purchased to replace an old Sony 5.1 Our living room is a unique shape and correct speaker placement was a challenge. I found and read the manual on-line before the unit arrived. There is a system calibration system built into this product which actually works well. In our relatively small, odd shaped room, spatial information from this unit is surprisingly good. Since 90% of the "low" information comes from the sub, the included surround speakers are small and light, but offer a clean sound.

This system is not for a true home theatre room, but I believe this Onkyo HTS5200 was just the right power and level of quality for our personal situation. No regrets. I give this unit 4 stars, as it is what I expected. If it really surprised me blew me away in sound quality and power, I'd give it 5 stars. Keeping the price in mind, I give it 5 stars. Read more

I gave away my Harmon Kardon because it was a older version without hdmi .So I purchase Onkyo s5200 system for the first time.Ok I spend hours on this trying to figure out why the hdmi audio did not work.
Well stupid as this sounds this Onkyo with 3 hdmi connection only allows Video hdmi run throught NO Audio hdmi run throught.
Now isn't that stupid, what's the point of having video hdmi run throught on a audio without audio hdmi run throught ??

I am now going to purchase Onkyo HT-S7100 or the Onkyo HT-S9100THX which has hdmi audio run through Read more

My wife and I(both teachers with modest budget) looked around at several home theater package deals, and kept coming back to this. It is a definite upgrade from our old system as far as quality goes. This system has great sound for our living room 20' X 16'. Set-up was extremely easy, and took about 45 minutes to have everything connected and running. The remote has the capabilities to run our DirecTV, DVD player, TV, and the receiver; eliminating the remote pile on the coffee table. The best part is the calibrated microphone and Audyssey 2EQ Room Correction and speaker setup. All you do is plug in the microphone, designate your top 3 listening points, and the system calibrates your speakers so that you have perfect sound in any of the 3 listening areas. All I know is I will feel like I am at the Super Bowl this year watching Jay Cutler and the Bears win, without actually being at the game, with this fantastic investment. I would highly recommend buying this. Read more

This system is a great value. I don't think it is the best system, but the sound quality is great and if you can tolerate the small quirks you get a great value. Quirk 1: HDMI is pass-through only. No big deal, as long as you are prepared for it. Quirk 2: It takes a couple of seconds for the sound to start after I resume my DVR after a pause or a skip forward back. (My PS3 doesn't have this same issue.) My previous surround sound system didn't exhibit this quirk, so I know it is something to do with this brand or model. No big deal, I got used to it, and overall I'm satisfied with this system. Like I said: you are getting a great value for a 7.1 surround sound system that SOUNDS great. Just deal with the quirks. Read more
