I saw this at Brookstone one day while shopping with a friend. I'd always liked frogs and thought the self-contained ecosystem idea was really neat, so I picked it out as my birthday gift. This was on July 1st. Just a few weeks later, the snail died. Ok, no problem, just need to get another one, it's free at this point anyway. So a week later two arrived in the mail, and they were both deposited into the tank. Within a few days, the smaller of the snails was dead, and another few weeks, the larger snail also died. I had been following the instructions exactly: Two pellets per frog twice a week, etc etc. During the phone call to get another replacement snail, I was told the species of the animals -- Nerite Snail, and African Dwarf Frogs. [...] Since I had the species names, I did a little research on google, and ignoring the PETA sites, I quickly became appalled at the living conditions for these frogs. First off, they need at least a gallon of water per frog, and they're living in roug

My Frog-O-Sphere Ecosystem is wonderful! I can add to my menagerie of pets without having to spend extra time cleaning and feeding. I enjoy watching them swim around, as does my cat. :) Two pellets, two times a week - it doesn't get any easier. I give these as birthday gifts for kids so they can learn to have a pet and also learn the science behind it (though my colleagues really like them too). Another plus is that these ecosystems are pretty! Read more

I was in Brookstone today looking for a travel pillow. I had found what I was looking for and was prepared to buy it when I saw a display of these along the back wall. As a biologist I was interested in the dynamics of the system and it was all very interesting. There is enough oxygen provided, cleaning is taken care of and it all looked like a solid design; except for one thing. The frogs seemed to be very anxious. I have since done a bit of research and for this species of frog, two individuals need a minimum of one gallon of water. This container contains nowhere near enough space for them. On top of this, the gravel is too coarse and it can harm the frog's sensitive skin. When I talked to the manager, he knew nothing about frog care. He only fed me some lines, right off the box.

A luxury good store should not sell pets if it can not properly inform its customer's about pet care and can not provide a safe environment for the pets. Read more

I love my froggies so much! I just found out they are female! I named them Nala (Gift) and Sarabi (Mirage). I also named my snail Rafiki (Friend). They seem to love their aquatic home. I love to watch them eat and play. They are interesting creatures. I got them as a gift from my sister in-law and have recommended to others. Read more
