I owned a Scotty Cameron Stainless Sudio Style Newport 2 putter until very recently. It was a pleasure to own: much like a vintage musical instrument, a fine automobile or prized bottle of wine. However, being a 18 hcp I really had no business using this putter. While it is long on quality and feel, it is less forgiving than many other putters available. My fundamentals and stroke mechanics simply weren't consistent enough to use it effectively. That's purely my fault, not the putter's, but it does suggest that the finest musical instrument in the hands of a beginner can still sound terrible. Scotty Cameron didn't intend this thing for people like me that routinely three-jack greens. You need a certain level of skill to make this putter sing. One day in the golf store he called me over with this look of amazement on his face and told me to try this putter. I said OK, reluctantly because they all felt the same to me. I have been a fan of Ping putter specially Anser 2 and Pal 2. Either they are isopur, isopur2 insert or just blade. I love Ping putters. When I first saw this putter I thought it is Ping Anser putter, the first one with no line. Well it was Scotty Cameron Newport 2. (Later I found out Newport 2.5 is very similar to Pal 2.) Anyways, I had to try this putter since everybody is talking about it. Everything is very similar with Anser putter except: 1. The sound and touch is softer than Ping Anser. Some people the level of feedback eiher by sound or touch is very fine. 2. The color of the material looks very carefully decided. And I like that very much. 3. The grip. Scotty uses rubber grip, with no texture on it, I mean the factory installed one, not the custom one. Personally I like Ping putter spiral type of grip better. First putter I've ever used that felt balanced, correctly weighted, and actually worked for me. I also have several Pings that work pretty good, but this is the putter that stays in my bag now. It works great for hitting the ball on line, but the best improvement for me was judging speed and distance. It has reduced the number of putts on every round I've played with it so far. I got the Newport 2.5 and the feeling is solid and confidence inspiring. I replaced a 12 year old Ping that I thought would go to the grave with me but this new putter makes the Ping feel like a lump of metal stuck on a hickory stick. Very smooth feeling through the ball and a well balanced motion. It has a very satisfying sound when the ball is struck and does not seem to cause any skip off the clubface.
