This is a truly amazing device. It is often compared to the iPod Touch, so I think I will compare it to it as well, because people are likely fairly familiar with the iPod.
1. Looks---The Archos looks nice, but I would definitely have to say the iPod Touch is sleeker and overall just more attractive...however looks are the only thing that is better about the iPod.
2. Touch screen---Both devices have a touch screen. Both screens work quite nicely. The Archos also has tactile buttons on the right side, which are useful if you don't want to have fingerprints on the screen.
3. Internet---Both devices support wifi internet, and do a nice job of it. Both support most things, because they both allow you to surf the "real" internet. The Archos however allows the viewing of flash videos anywhere on the net, including youtube while the iPod can only play flash videos on youtube. Overall the Archos has better internet because of this video playing support.
4. Compatibility---This is the area wher

I was impressed with the units styling and design when I first opened the box. I thought the small screen size would be a liability but it is adequate for all personal picture and video viewing. It is really a mini-computer with its own operating system, internal memory and hard drive to store your media files.
Pros - holds all the photos, mp3 audio and sufficient number of video files to keep you entertained and back-up your photos for the duration of most any travelling you may do. Photos and video look great (under normal indoor lighting or at night) even on the little screen (4.5" isn't much larger than the preview screen on some of the larger digital camera) but being able to zoom into the photo and navigate the "blown up" screen image makes up for this.
Cons - Like most LCD screens its not very bright in brightly lit areas (outdoors or in the car in bright sunlight) making it difficult to see unless you shade the screen carefully. Audio amp is not as powerful as the one built

Archos has been making some the nicest MP3 players for years. They came out with Video Mp3 players years before the Ipod Video and I still think their larger LCD size and amazing resolution outperforms IPod. This is however the first Archos I have owned without a removable battery which is fairly limiting. The battery life is great tho even in video mode. It charches with a proprietary USB cable but AC/DC chargers are available. If you want to play all video formats or browse the net there is a Plugin that you are required to but for $20 so expect to pay for that for full video compatibility and functionality. Its definatelt an upgrade from the 604 with a great screen and improved response time and processing. The Opera web browser allows you to view Youtube and other flash player websites which is a plus. The touch screen is very easy to operate and again is an Archos feature that has been out longer then the Ipod Touch. Overall it's a a great all in one portable MP3, video and web Bro

I use this when I travel. I also had the AV500 model. For the most part I don't think the differences are worth the price to upgrade.
The unit works well. The interface is a little cumbersome and its one thing I wish they would update.
Overall its great for travel. Its the perfect size for watching on a plane. With the optional DVR station its easy to use with a TV.
The case supplied is terrible, so plan to buy one.
I like the WMV support as it works well with downloads from shift.tv (German TV PVR Service). Movies play well. Video is my primary use. The games were hard to download, but work OK. They are a little hard to see. WiFi works well. Read more

The Archos 605 is a great product; 160GB is definitely well beyond what Apple users can think of. But the design has some flaws: the one thing that disappointed me most is that you cannot listen to music while reading a PDF file. Artchos definitely need to address this!
Playlists are not as user-friendly this is crucial when you have 160GB machine, there should be an easier interface...
Overall, I am very happy with my Archos, a nice upgrade from my previous iPods... Read more
