I've had problems in the past where the ink flow becomes very light and thin, maybe skips a bit too, but only after a good amount of use. There will still be ink left (you can see it), but it doesn't write well. I've also had a few that I've run dry that wrote fine until they were empty. Extended solid writing periods (essays) can also be a bit of a temporary problem, because the ink doesn't flow to the pen tip as fast as it flows onto the page. A short break/change to a different pen solves the problem. These pens can blot a bit, and will bleed through thin paper, but not uncommonly so for this type of pen. They work best on smooth-surface paper, not good on things like construction paper. I think thats why they go into the above state.
