I wanted a warm, casual but well-made down jacket for wear in very cold weather on the MN-Ontario border. I do not do mountain climbing or winter camping. The OR Megaplume jacket is rated at 650-fill down and although that's not a heavy-duty rating compared to some other "cold weather" down jackets, in some actual comparison testing it came out on top. I also tried a men's medium in the Mountain Hardware Sub-Zero hooded jacket (too short and too tight); a woman's large in that same Mountain Hardware jacket [$]( my spouse said it looked like a woman's jacket but fit me at 5'9, 160# and actually would have been my 3rd choice); THF Catalyst (flimsy and very low loft for a supposedly 800-fill jacket but otherwise nice for fit; this was the biggest disappointment of all I tested and called into question both the 800-fill rating and the legitimacy of the brand); and TNF Prism Optimus jacket. The Prism Optimus was a close second to the Megaplume: it is rated at 700-fill and was nearly as "lof

Let me start off by saying this jacket is excellent. Most importantly, it is very warm. It comes down right below the belt line and the thing is absolutely jam packed with down. Incredibly, it is 100% windproof and repels water effortlessly! It has kept me warm on several winter excursions in the Eagle Caps. The design and quality is very good. It is very light and packs into a stuffing sack about the size of a football. The hood is very warm and large enough for a helmet. If there was one thing I could change it would be the outer shell. The pertex is everything it advertises (windproof/super-water-resistant), but it is pretty thin. While snowshoeing, I slipped and caught a thorn or sharp branch on the way down. It tore right through the pertex shell leaving a hole in the right sleeve. Thank goodness for the unlimited lifetime warranty! To sum up, this thing can easily handle any subzero outdoor activity, but be mindful of the thin outer shell (which really isnt all tha

I bought this jacket for use in the bitter cold, but often wet conditions of the Carpathian Mountain region of Ukraine, Romania, Moldova, and Poland. I work outside through the winter on orphanage construction projects; so I need a jacket that's warm, but also H2O-proof when the snow turns to freezing rain, then to ice, then back to snow in a single day. The performance of this jacket is beautiful; keeps you dry in anything but a complete downpour; but temperature management inside the jacket is still quite comfortable even when your heart rate is up. In my opinion, the only downside to the Megaplume is the fit. I'm 6'2"+, but only 180#, so I'm fairly skinny, but I have a really long wingspan. I first ordered a large, because of the sleeve length, but I felt like the "Michelin Man". WAY too much heat waisting dead space in my torso (especially the small of my back). So when I exchanged it for a medium, I found that, although the sleeves were closr to the correct length(ever so slight

This a really good jacket. Just take in count that it is large for a medium, what I mean is that if you are not exactly in the medium size you should probably buy a small. I am 5'6 148 pounds and I am a small and it fits perfect.

I ride my moped in the winter and walk outside when it is 23 degrees and I only get cold in my legs. Which means it is a really good jacket when i only get to use a regular t-shirt inside and the jacket and feel warm. Read more

This jacket is super warm and the hood wraps around my head nicely. I wear a size 46 jacket but need 37 inch length sleeves so I got the XL, which is a wee bit short in the arms and quite specious in the torso, but nothing has ever fit me perfectly. This keeps me warm when on the ocean in 15 degree/25 knot weather. Read more
