I purchased this camera in January 2008 as my first digital SLR (actually my first SLR period). The layout of the controls is so straight-forward with quick access to everything you might need to change on the fly. The owner's manual is well laid out and it comes with a quick start guide to hit the highlights so you can be out shooting pictures quickly. The included kit lens offers a very usable focal range for many photography situations and subjects. This lens will see many photo opportunities while giving me the chance to see what other lenses if any I will need. I have taken some wonderful pictures with this camera in the past month. I did make one other lens purchase to complement this kit. I puchased the Canon 50 mm f/1.8 lens (very inexpensive) for indoor sports photography and was able to catch some great basketball action shots of my son's school team without even using the flash. This camera is quick, easy to operate, and perfoms well in various lighting situations

I switched from the Pentax *ist D and I can't be more happy. The 40d is fast and rock solid. Its menu system is big but easy to learn. I really like the MY MENU, great for getting somewhere fast. Great images with low noise. I just got the Canon 50mm f/1.4 and it rocks on this camera. My Pentax did me good and its long in the tooth now and what a difference 3 years makes. If your camera is anything older then a Canon 30d then get the 40d you will be happy. If you got the 30d get the 40d, its a good upgrade that doesn't cost to much. If you got the 5d the 40d will give it a run for the money. Read more

I swore I would never use the word "awesome" to describe a camera. Well, the 40D is one AWESOME camera. The 40D is just the perfect merger of the relatively) inexpensive price of the XTi,and the features and capabilities of the 5D and higher. Alas, it still has a 1.6x crop factor, but that is truly insignificant. I have been shooting Digital since they first hit the market. I jumped in head first with this new camera and a new 70-200 L series lens WOW what a combo and outstanding quality. You will not be disappointed. in fact there are numerous reviews about this camera being as good if not better in IQ (Image Quality) as the Canon 5d. And I see them as being true! Not much more to say except this one is a home run for sure... Read more

So far I have taken about 400 indoor sports photos. I've needed to push the ISO to 1600 to keep the shutter speed at an acceptable level. The IS lens also helps. I've taken most photos around 1/125th of a second. I've created posters up to 22" x 28" with acceptable results. The best feature is the acceptable noise level at ISO 1600. Read more
