I wear my boots to work and they have to be polished. I dyed my boots cordovan and polised them - wow, they look great and took the treatment well! The rand protects the shine. The boots were comfortable out of the box and keep getting better. I would be very satisfied even if I had paid full price. Read more

I am a serious hiker from the Northwest. I do alot of elevation gain on uneven terrain. This boot is very supportive and comfortable going up and down steep slopes. I have a wide foot, and this 10.5 Wide fits great! This is my second purchase. This boot is rated for backpacking, but makes a great hiking boot for steep trails. Read more

I've been using a pair of FSN95s for about 5 years for day hiking and backpacking trips up to 9 days. I got the Sasslongs for the latter application.

The Sasslong one-piece leather uppers are taller than on my FSN95s and offer more ankle support. They also provide a little more rock protection and water resistance. In addition, less trail dust seems to get through.

The Vibram soles on the Sasslongs have a more aggressive cleat pattern than the FSN95s and offer slightly better traction on loose trails. The rubber compound appears to be a bit harder so they may not be as good on slippery rock.

The midsoles on the Sasslongs are more substantial than on the FSN95s. I think this will offer better bruise protection when carrying a substantial pack over pointy rocks.

On the negative side, the Sasslongs seem somewhat warmer than the FSN95s. They are also heavier (around 7 ounces per boot---estimate). I haven't noticed this on 4-6 mile day hikes but I'm sure it would become

I have done a lot of mountain trails at 8-12,00 feet. These boots are great for stabilizing you on rough trails and on long treks. Use heavy wool socks with liners.

They work well in hurricanes with severe debris. Read more

I am a professional arborist. I climb trees, spray trees, work in the dirt, and walk many miles a day. Many different boots have rapidly succumbed to the demands placed on them daily. Work boots, hiking boots, etc. I chose this pair because they are basically one piece of leather, have a full rubber rand, a substantial outsole, and Gore-Tex lining. Any other boot would remain usable for maybe three months. Things inevitably go wrong. The outsole wears super fast, or the upper breaks apart. These were one of the most comfortable boots I have tried, right out of the box, but did require some break-in. Didn't take long. After almost a year, these boots have finally been worn to a point where they are no longer comfortable. The midsole is shot, yet the upper remains intact. The rand is pulling way from the leather in a few places, but is still in one piece. The outsole is worn but still has some miles left. They are still water tight. I was standing in four inches of water ju
