Our universal cable remote had codes for Yamaha receivers, but none of them worked with the receiver model we just bought. Not wanting to fuss with multiple remotes, we knew this meant that we needed to buy a learning remote.
After reading lots of reviews online, I was ready to buy a Logitech Harmony 670 for $150, but my husband noticed the Universal Remote for $20. We loved that it had both a guide and an info button like our cable remote. It also has both on and off buttons, which was very useful since our Yamaha receiver has separate buttons for on and off (as opposed to one power button). Plus, it is a learning remote and it has a macro function that allows it to turn on and off multiple devices with the push of one button and a simple volume function that allows the volume buttons to control the receiver even when the remote is in cable mode. This plus the power macro means we NEVER have to push a mode button. We wanted simple operation, and we got it!
It was VERY easy to program.

        Alrighty, I just bought a new 32" VIZIO LCD HDTV which came with a remote that I couldn't program to anything. So I thought my best bet was to find a Universal remote. I searched and searched and I found this one that didn't appear bad (physical appearance) and the price was just what I was willing to pay.
I went to my local BestBuy and picked one up, came home and within 5 minutes I had the remote programed to my VIZIO television and DIRECT TV cable receiver.
As I continued to read the manual, I learned that the controller itself was able to learn off of other controllers. You can program any button on the controller to any button's function on the other controller without fail.
I thought I was done when I started to think to myself, "Gee, I wonder if I can program my stereo..." Mind you, it is about 8 years old. No problem the Universal GOD said.
I ended up programing the following devices: VIZIO 32" LCD HDTV, RCA DIRECT TV cable box, Samsung stereo, XBox 360 console, and my iHome fo

        Setup of the remote is a little cumbersome at first, but once you get the hang of it it goes very quickly. I had everything programmed in under 10 minutes and the macros work great. The only thing this remote won't do that my Harmony would do is select specific inputs without having to scroll through the input menu (these commands are available through the Harmony database but not on my original TV remote). The macros on the R6 are a close substitute and the price cannot be beat. <a href="http://www.buzzillions.com/reviews/universal-remote-control-6-device-r6-reviews#bz-model-review-5386916">Read more</a>

        This is a basic remote for a good price. I mainly use it for my TV (as the original remote stopped working) and while it doesn't contain all of the features it functions as I need it. The directions could have been written a bit better but ultimately the setup was easy. My only complaint is its range. To operate the remote I really need to point directly at the TV remote control signal sensor. <a href="http://www.buzzillions.com/reviews/universal-remote-control-6-device-r6-reviews#bz-model-review-7085937">Read more</a>

        <p>
        I needed a remote with learning capabilities because my TV/DVD/VCR Combo unit has never worked with universal remotes. This was the cheapest I could find with learning. My digital converter box and a 5-disc DVD player worked with the quick set-up right away. Getting the TV to work with the learning took a while because each key had to be done separately, and some took a couple of trys before they worked. Not sure if that was the fault of the new remote or original but either way it was annoying. Now that everything is set up, it works well. Don't expect this to be anything fancy, but with some patience it is more than sufficient. If you have the money, invest in a Logitech, otherwise, this will most likely serve your needs for a great price. If you know you won't need the learning capabilities, you can probably find something cheaper. <a href="http://www.buzzillions.com/reviews/universal-remote-control-6-device-r6-reviews#bz-model-review-10651125">Read more</a>
