3 Things to Know Before You Buy

1. Vacuum sealing can dramatically increase the lifespan of your food.

2. Glass and stainless steel containers last longer than plastic and are much more environmentally-friendly.

3. A good airtight seal will get you the most out of your storage containers.
Frequently Asked Questions
  • Besides bags and containers, is there a cheaper alternative to vacuum sealers?

If you don't want to buy a vacuum sealer, you can suck out the air in a storage bag with a straw just before sealing it. While this method isn't perfect, it's still worth a shot.

  • What's new in food storage?

Vacuum-seal containers go beyond flimsy plastic bags and containers. They work on the premise that food left exposed to air will rot much faster. By sucking out the air, the lifespan of a food item is prolonged, especially if it's frozen. Vacuum sealing definitely works but it's a little pricey: besides the sealing unit, you'll need to purchase the special sealing bags that have been designed for use on the sealing unit.

  • Is there really a difference between cheap plastic containers and more expensive plastic containers?

Poor-quality plastic containers can warp with heat and lose their seal easily. Cheap containers usually have very thin plastic which can degrade very easily and at a faster rate.

A container marked as "dishwasher-safe" is a good indication of quality. A dishwasher-safe container can stand up to higher temperatures without warping and will usually have thicker, sturdier plastic.

How to Shop for Food Storages

Most food storage take the form of canisters, jars and bags. Everything else is usually a simple, plastic box of some sort.

Canisters are great for long-term storage of things like spices, grains and sugar. No matter what you put in them, make sure they have an airtight lid to prevent moisture, bacteria and insects from destroying your stash. You'll find a great variety of jars on Buzzillions, from cookie jars to mason jars for canning. Again, an airtight lid is ideal to keep contaminants out. Storage bags are perfect for wrapping up sandwiches and leftovers. Vacuum-sealed bags are best for long-term storage as they were designed to trap out air for better preservation.

There are also several specialty storage containers available, including deviled egg containers and containers for pies. The options are endless and it's worth putting a few keywords in the search box to find the exact container you're looking for.

Size
Size and storage capacity all depends on what and how much you want to store. Flat bags are cheap, versatile and can store a wide variety of foods. Bulkier, box-type containers are more appropriate for bigger items like pasta and grains in bulk.

Material
Most plastic containers, whether they're bags or boxes, are made out of plastic. Plastic is versatile and, in the case of containers, microwaveable and dishwasher-safe; unfortunately, they also tend to lose their seal easily, allowing air and bacteria into the container. Plastic can also leach chemicals, especially if the surface is scratched or abraded. You should expect plastic containers to last a few years before you have to buy new ones. For a more permanent and environmentally-friendly solution, check out glass or stainless steel containers.

Brand
Rubbermaid and Ziploc are a few of the most popular food storage brands on Buzzillions. Rubbermaid makes Tupperware-style containers, while Ziploc's line of storage bags have been recently joined by their newest line of plastic containers.
