Learn about Golf Shoes

If you already know about golf shoes, read ahead to our Reviewers' Favorite or Budget Choice golf shoes. If you're not sure what to look for, read on!

In 1857, the first golf shoes hit the greens when golfers began to wear shoes with nails or sprigs sticking out of the soles of their shoes. This type of shoe grew more and more popular, prompting the creation of golf shoes with screw in spikes in 1891. While these were a lot more comfortable to walk on, the greens were getting torn up. There was no alternative to the screw in spike for 100 years until in the 1990's, manufacturers developed rubber and plastic spikes—a win-win for the traction of the golfer and in keeping golf greens intact. It was in the 1980's that the golf shoe finally became more comfortable, lighter, flexible and structured. Today's golf shoes offer the ultimate in support, style and flexibility along with rubber removable spikes for superior traction on the course and comfort in walking off the course.

Frequently Asked Questions
  • What to avoid

You should try to avoid steel or metal spikes on your shoes if you want to play on most golf courses. Also, stiff upper leathers can be uncomfortable when walking long distances on the golf course.

  • What to look for

Look for golf shoes that are lightweight with soft and supple leather uppers with waterproofing as well as breathability to keep your feet dry. A shoe with support for the foot with 12 spike rubber spike formation will offer the stability you need to nail that shot.

THINtech technology is a hot new feature in golf shoes that allows the golfer to stand lower in the shoe giving him or her better feel for the course and a lower center of gravity. The power band chassis is another great feature that sits at the sole of the shoe and offers lateral stability to the golfer. Microfiber heels and foam fit inners are some other hot features that golfers are raving about.

  • What brand should I buy?

Our reviewers chose Ecco, Etonic, Puma and Calloway as the top brands in golf shoes for superior quality, stability and craftsmanship.

  • Tips & Tricks

When choosing a golf shoe, consider shoes that are convertible from greens to clubhouse and back. Removable spike wear makes for easy cleaning, but choose the kind that converts the shoe to a walking shoe and you have a two in one shoe.

  • Notes of Caution

Do not play golf in tennis shoes or running sneakers. While you might do this when first starting out, you will be slipping and sliding with every swing like Tom Cruise in Risky Business.

How to Shop for Golf Shoes

When shopping for golf shoes, there are features to consider that make your game better. The first thing to do is go for a popular brand that has a reputation for making great golf shoes. Since the shoe is a performance based shoe, certain brands specialize in creating a product that enhances your game.

Consider the type of cleats on your shoes. Generally, golf shoes come with 12 spikes per shoe. The spikes ground the golfer to the turf as the torque from the swing puts force on the golfer. Without spikes, the golfer would slip, which would affect the swing and subsequently, the direction, speed and accuracy of the shot. The most green friendly spikes are soft spikes which are lightweight, made of rubber or plastic and do not tear up the greens. They are easy to remove and clean, however do not offer the best in traction and are not very durable, needing to be replaced over time. Ceramic or carbide spikes are more durable but also more expensive than soft spikes. These spikes have threads and steel flanges that offer great traction, but they are hard to maintain, requiring constant cleaning. Those with plastic threads on the ceramic or carbide spikes require less maintenance, making them a better choice. Finally, the most durable and provides the most traction is the metal or steel spike. They are high maintenance, requiring constant cleaning and drying to prevent rust. The biggest downside is that most golf courses do not allow them because they severely tear up the greens. ...show more

Once you have decided on the type of spikes you want on your shoes, you will want to take a look at what materials are used in the making of the shoe. Waterproofing is especially important when playing in climates where it rains. Breathable fabric is preferable because it allows the foot to breathe and absorbs sweat, keeping the foot dry.

A lightweight shoe is often preferred, especially for walking long courses. Look for a shoe that is as light as possible, yet has enough stability to support the foot. Some shoes come with an inner foam fit sock, for a snug and comfortable fit offering the best in support.

Golf shoes often fit true to the size of a sneaker or tennis shoe. Try them on and walk around the store to see if the fit works for you. With the amount of walking on a golf course, you want to make sure that the shoe is comfortable for long time wear.
