Learn about Hair Gels

If you already know about hair gels, read ahead to our Reviewers' Favorite or Budget Choice hair gels. And if you're not sure what to look for, read on!

Hair gel was invented just about 100 years ago for the fashion and hair industry. The main purpose of using gel hair has not changed, just the styles. Originally gel for hair was mainly used for men. Made out of petroleum jelly and corn oil, Brylcream was one of the first hair gels. It was marketed to men to keep hair slicked down and in place. In the 1930's, hair gel was marketed to both men and women, but women didn't really grab onto it until the 1980's hit. Then hair gel flew off the shelves and into the homes of women and men everywhere to create that big hair look and punk spike styles.

How to Shop for Hair Gels

When shopping for hair gel, it is a good idea to consider your hair type and length as well as the look you are seeking. If you have dry hair, alcohol is an ingredient that you can do without as it can dry your hair further. The rule of thumb with any hair product is to choose one that has the smallest number of ingredients. The more organic and natural, the better a gel is for keeping your hair in great condition.

Next, let's look at hair length. Shorter styles can spike really great with a strong hold gel and usually does better if you have a cut that has short layers. Longer hair does better with a less stiff hold, but a gel that allows you to scrunch curls or hold bigger, wavy curls... or even flip out the ends. If you have layers, a gel is great for adding depth and separation.

Now let's figure out the look you are seeking. For today's super spiky short looks, go for a strong hold gel, the stiffer the better. Also, look for ingredients that add shine -- it will be written on the bottle because if it adds shine they want you to know it. And you also want a product that has the least amount of build up because the less your hair weighs the longer it will stay spiked. Also, you want to be able to add more to freshen up the look and easily wash it out for a different style tomorrow.

If you are looking for a chunky, layered look with flipped out ends on long or short hair, a moderate hold that is not so stiff is your best bet. Applying the gel before drying also allows it to hold well without that crunchy feel.

For long curly hair, apply before and after drying and scrunch in your hands. A light to moderate gel is all that is needed and of course look for a product with shine enhancers. For adding big curls with hot rollers, a moderate gel works great.
