Learn about Meat Grinders

The inclusion of the word "meat" in the name "meat grinder" is really rather unfortunate. It severely limits people's interpretation of the device; meat grinders have a wide variety of uses in the modern kitchen, and we'll learn about some of those in this guide.

A meat grinder can really be considered to be an automatic mincer. If there is any recipe that requires a large amount of mincing, consider using a grinder. Mince chick peas together with your favorite additions to make a delicious falafel, or grind up potatoes for homemade potato pancakes. There are as many applications as your imagination can think of. And let's not forget the standard uses; pork and beef can be ground up and personalized with the addition of spices and vegetables to make fantastic sausages and hamburgers.

Meat grinders accept raw or cooked ingredients through a funnel. From there, the material is caught by a screw conveyer. This screw conveyer can be powered either by hand, or electrically to push the food through a tunnel until it arrives at a knife. This knife rotates directly in front of a fixed hole plate. As the food is pushed by the screw conveyer, it is simultaneously extruded through the fixed hole plate and chopped by the knife to mince the food and deposit it out the other end of the device.

Meat grinders are easily disassembled for quick cleaning and this also allows the possibility of reconfiguration. A wide variety of fixed hole plates can be used to extrude food into different shapes, or mince it more or less coarsely. If the knife is removed, different materials can be pushed through the fixed hole plate. Dough can be extruded through various size plates to make pasta or macaroni.

How to Shop for Meat Grinders

In this section, we will take a look at several different types of grinders and analyze their advantages and disadvantages.

Hand Powered
The most basic type of meat grinder is the hand powered grinder. These are usually made of steel and are bolted to the tabletop. They feature a large crank for powering the screw conveyor. Hand powered units are a bit old fashioned, but have several large advantages over electric grinders. Hand powered units are extremely portable; pack it up and take it camping, or bring it over to a dinner party without worrying about plugging in or attaching it to a stand mixer. They are also quite compact, and are the easiest type of grinder to clean because the whole unit can be washed in water with no adverse effects. This typical hand powered meat grinder by Northern Industrial Tools comes at a great price.

Stand Alone Electric
These types of grinders are for people who will end up doing a lot of meat and food mincing. Stand alone electric grinders are plugged in to a standard outlet to power the screw conveyor. These units are typically larger than hand powered grinders because they include a motor mechanism. They can also be quite heavy and are more expensive than hand powered models, but their main advantage is in their precision. These grinders are built to be precise, accurate, and durable. When looking at stand alone electric grinders, make sure that any piece of the machine that will come in contact with meat is removable to allow easy cleaning.

Stand Mixer Adaptors
These types of units are made to attach directly onto your existing stand mixer. The most popular grinder of this type is the KitchenAid attachment. This attachment and models similar to it are good for someone with a mixer already. These grinders combine most of the advantages of hand powered models with all of the advantages of stand alone grinders. The entire apparatus can be submerged in water without any bad effects, they are small and lightweight, and they are electrically powered so they are easy to use. The only disadvantage of these models is that they must be used with a stand mixer; it is difficult to bring them to a friend's place and expect to be able to use them.

Extra Features
Several extra attachments exist on the market for people looking for more applications. Sausage stuffer attachments can be fit on the end of the meat grinder. This extra device is basically a funnel which can accept a sausage casing. When the sausage filling comes out of the grinder, it pulls the casing with it, making it easy to create your own sausages.

Some meat grinders also come with a mixer unit. This unit is used instead of the funnel. Food is placed in the mixer, where ingredients can be combined before they are pushed through the screw conveyor. These units are great for making personalized recipes, as any ingredient you desire can be thrown into the mixer before it is extruded through the grinder.
