Learn about Portable Photo Printers

The first inkjet printers became widely available to us in 1988, when Hewlett Packard (HP) brought us the DeskJet Printer. However, the price point for the printer and ink was out of reach for most people, starting at $1000. But it sparked a boom in technology and a race to produce printers to be used in the home that were affordable and convenient. For the next 30 years, the progression from black ink printers to color inkjet printers to photo printers developed at lightning speed. Today photo printers are portable, have direct camera to photo capabilities and produce lab quality pictures at about 15 pages per minute. The ability of these printers to go mobile fits nicely with our fast paced world. Take a picture, print it and hand out great photos to your guests before they even leave the party!

  • Tips & Tricks

The key to a great portable photo printer is one that not only prints high quality photos, but one that prints quickly and quietly. Look for DPI output when choosing your photo printer and look at the weight of the printer if you plan on being mobile.

  • Notes of Caution

Beware of cheaper portable photo printers where you forgo quality for price. Any printer that delivers less than 1000 x 1000 dpi photos is really not worth the price, even if the price is just $5. If you are going to print photos, you want the quality to show. They do not have to be lab quality, but picture clarity and color are important.
