Learn about Remote Controls

In the 1950s, Zenith was the creator of what is considered the first television remote control. Not so remote, the "Lazy Bone" (as it was called) had a long, bulky cable so you could take the controller across the living room to the couch and change television stations as well as control volume. In 1955, Zenith introduced the "Flash-matic," the first true wireless remote control. Today we have come a long way from those bulky and limited remote controls. We have remote controls for everything from television to stereos, car starters, to unlock doors and even to turn on heat or air conditioning.

How to Shop for Remote Controls

When shopping for a remote control, the first thing you want to look for is a reputable brand with a warranty behind it. Ease of use is the next more important feature. Some remote controls have great technology behind them, but you have to be a rocket scientist to learn how to operate them. You also want a remote control that can take a licking and keep on ticking. Typically remotes get lost between couch cushions, dropped on hardwood floors, spilled on, and stepped on. Today's remote controls are durable, dependable and offer so many features. Universal remote controls that control many components in one piece offer the best way to keep organized and avoid the clutter and confusion of multiple remote controls.
