Char-Griller Side Fire Box Review

Good buy, needs a little work

"The SFB is a great add on. The box is built well, and has a good finish. The downside to it though, is that it sits a little crooked on the grill. I have mine on a Chargriller Outlaw grill, and it works great, but sits a little sideways because the spacers are just a little too long. Mounting the box to the grill was little bit of a pain, lots of hammering and drilling, and four letter words. The drawback to the box, it has little bit of a gap that allows your smoke to escape, and makes temp control a pain. Once you get a handle on things it's not too bad though. A few little tweaks here and there, and some carefully placed JB Weld will get you squared away. Keep in mind that once you install this guy on grill, it's on it forever. The installation requires you to bust out some knock outs on the side of the grill, leaving you with a permanent gaping hole in the side of the grill. You also need to watch yourself when you bust out the knock outs. There are two little tabs that need to stay in place during the process and it's tough to keep from bending these guys during the hammering. After the assembly of the box and the grill, I took a gas torch and heated all the areas that were out of wack, and bent them back to where they needed to be. Cleaning is easy, if it's just the ash pan. Any ash that drops into the box is a bit a chore to get out. If you have large hands, like me, getting all the bolts put in, is also a pain in the neck. But, despite all the problems getting it installed, it is GREAT!! Fix your leaks, and you're good to go. I just did a beer-butt chicken, indirect heat, with some almond in the smoke box, 275 degrees for 2.5 hours, turned out EXCELLENT!! Can't wait to smoke some salmon, duck and venison. All in all, I'm very pleased with it."
