Dynex 42" 1080p Flat-Panel LCD HDTV Review
"This is my first LCD TV. It is replacing a Toshiba 50" rear projection TV that I used at 1080i over component inputs. I know it is hard to objectively review anything as a consumer since we normally do not get a chance to really compare a lot of different TV's, in depth, other than what you see in a store display. As one other reviewer stated, once you have this in your home you will honestly not be able to tell the difference since most people don't have all the other HD TV's around to compare it to.
I was a little apprehensive about getting a TV with a brand I never heard of. One thing that helped me decide was that my brother purchased the same TV about a month ago and he recommended it to me. I researched it a bit on the inet and found that this particular TV had favorable reviews. Dynex is BB's house brand as pointed out already. This gave me a bit more confidence in my purchase.
Needless to say, I had to have the TV replaced the first day. The red channel on both component inputs were bad giving everything a brownish-green cast. I double checked it was not my cables by using another set of new component cables I had. Both my DVD player and my PS2 had the same issue. Something was also wrong with the digital tuner as all the digital channels were stuttering and pixilated. TBH, I think the first TV was damaged in transit or something.
I exchanged the TV the same day and I was surprised at how easy it was to get the exchange done. After one of the BB reps tested the TV they came back and told the CS rep to go ahead and exchange the TV for me. Kudos to the CS reps at the El Paso, TX, Sunland Park BB.
Once the new TV was home and installed, I had no troubles. Digital HD channels are crystal clear and everything over component (480p) came through the way it is supposed to. I was actually shocked at how good standard def DVD movies look on this set. I have a hard disk based media center appliance also. I hooked it up to the component inputs and realized that I will have to re-rip my DVD collection. Compression artifacts are very apparent, though I think it is no fault of the TV and more my compressed files.
I have an up converting DVD player on the way and am anxious to see how it is going to look over HDMI. I realize its not true 1080p but if standard def DVDs look this good, it can only get better.
The viewing angle is very good. My seating is arranged so that the widest angle anyone see's is at most about 45-60 degrees.
Sound quality directly from the TV is acceptable at most. The volume is really low and I am sitting about 8-9 feet away from the TV. It really is not too much of an issue since I have the audio piped through my receiver anyway. These are very small TV speakers, what do you expect?
Overall, I think this TV is a good value as a first time LCD big screen buyer but spring for the extra warranty, just in case. You will still get a good deal with the extra $100 or so tacked on."
