GE WPDH8800JMV Front Load Washer- VERMILION RED Review

GE Profile 8800 Washer- Mixed Review

★★☆☆☆
2.0

"I had the washer and dryer delivered on February 17, 2009. I fell in love.

I did read all the reviews I could find on the internet, but took into account that the reliability rating by CR is 90%. Slim chance I'd get a lemon, right?

First the bad news. After two weeks I turned on the washer and the POWER came on but the door lock wouldn't engage and the washer wouldn't start.

I turned to the manual and tried everything they suggested, plus a few computer tricks like unplugging everything and waiting 15-30 minutes to re-boot the system, and unplugging the cord to the dryer and the power cord and waiting again. Nothing worked.

Manual recommends that you check the filter in the front of the machine for small items that may be clogging it. It does NOT warn you that the filter in the front of the machine will be FULL of a LOT of water so I spent an hour trying to mop up all the water under the 225 lb. machine that I couldn't move by myself.

Service came out in two days, but said it needed a new controller board and re-scheduled for two WEEKS! I had to haul laundry to a laundromat for two weeks, with a brand, new $1,100 washer sitting in my laundry room. URGH!

Make sure to insist that they overnight any parts you need and return the day of delivery.

We got the controller board and it still didn't work. Repairman replaced the lock ( thank goodness he had some in his truck.) and the machine worked on the drain/spin cycle. BUT, once I started the machine with clothes the door locked, then unlocked then flooded my laundry room again. This time there was so much water it leaked through the wall and into the garage! Called the service guy back on this cell phone and he came right back. Apparently I had not replaced the filter correctly ( no instructions or warnings in the manual) and it came loose.

My laminate floor that is less than 5 years old is starting to buckle from the dual floodings.

Repairman said he's gone on a lot of calls for this machine.

On the plus side:

It looks GREAT and what a fun toy, when it is working.

I love being able to see the count down so I know when to come back and check to see if it is finished. I realize that with re-balancing this is only an estimate.

I was told that front-loaders take longer to wash, period, because they use so much less water. So no complaints there.

However, the maximum spin cycle is 1300 rpm so clothes are much drier coming out to begin with. Drying takes a lot less time, and the dryer is the more expensive machine to run, so I like that!

Caution: I only use the highest SPIN cycle for towels, etc. I was warned by a sales person not use it if there is anything that you would care not to have wrinkled.

It did take 5-6 tries the first time to balance the load, but since then all have balanced within one to two tries. I would suggest reading the manual and following the manufacture's instructions on sorting if you are having balancing problems. I do mixed loads all the time, handwash sweaters and have done sheets only, towels only and a comforter and all have been problem free. The only time my clothes where not spun dry was when I stopped the cycle myself.

I love the specialty cycles, and the size of the drum. It was lovely to wash a small king sized comforter and not feel that I was seriuosly over-loading the machine.

Love that the washer and dryer "talk" to each other. I tweak the settings it chooses and we are off to the races. I do set my dryer for more dry or extra dry. The dry setting does not seem to do a good job of getting things as dry as I like.

I use mostly the WRINKLE FREE setting and the extended tumble and clothes look great coming out of the dyer.

The sales person I bought these from said these models have only been out since July 2008. I would recommend waiting a year of two for them to work out the kinks in the electronics."
