jWIN Electronics JX-CD561D Portable MP3 CD Boombox with USB / SD / MMC reader Review

Not bad but not great: satisfactory

"Recommended with reservations: I purchased this item for my wife to take to Sweden for her annual summer visit. Her existing boombox (larger, heavier, more powerful) had a non-functioning (non MP3) CD player. I needed something with dual voltage. This appeared to be versatile, compact, lightweight, etc. It turned out to be a somewhat satisfactory purchase. It does play MP3 CDs, Flash Drives, and SD cards. But no cassette (still have lots of them). It does have a digital (readout) radio though you have to turn a knob to dial up the station and it goes by half-steps so you can use the FM in Europe. But the antenna is short. It is not especially sensitive. Because of the small speakers and minimal amplifier the sound is neither very loud nor of superior quality. However I found that when I patched the line-out (rare on boomboxes) to some small but decent, powered computer speakers the volume level and quality significantly increased. Of course this defeats the purpose of a portable boombox. So as a tuner and disc/flash/mem card player it is quite acceptable. Headphone use is OK too. The lack of presets will be a little annoying since in Sweden there are only 3 or 4 possible stations in the countryside and they are spread out on the dial. I will also have to send a length of wire and a clip in case the reception is a problem. The single included accessory is a stereo mini patch cable (male on both ends) so that you can patch an mp3 player into the unit using the headphone jack of the mp3 player into the line-in (also rare) jack that is provided. All in all this will probably work for her if it holds up to travel in a carryon bag and subsequent use by her and others visiting (children with mp3 players)."
