"I use these primarily for birdwatching, and I wasn't willing to spend over a thousand on a pair of swarovskis or zeiss. For my money, the Nikon Monarchs are the best price/performace value out there. My wife has a pair that are 3 years old, and I finally got a pair for myself. The lenses are quite good, with excellent color and low light performance.

I've seen reviews that call these compact and lightweight. Having used a pair of nikon travelites for the past 3 years, my neck and shoulders would disagree. I think the monarchs are excellent for dedicated birdwatching walks, but if I'm hiking and only need the bins occassionally, I still prefer to carry the travelites. What's lost in image quality (and it's noticeable) is gained in convenience.

I've noticed that my focus wheel is considerably slower/stiffer than my wife's (identical model). I had thought that it would loosen up with use, but after 2 months, I'm whinking perhaps not. Nikon has sold lots of these, and this may be a quality control issue. Best to try out the actual purchase pair before you buy.
