"Pros: In my work I am often required to travel to places I’ve never so much as heard of on very short notice. I have owned my Tomtom One for several months now and it has yet to let me down. Both the visual and audio turn-by-turn directions are clear and easy to follow. If you make a wrong turn, within seconds the unit recalculates the route to get you to your destination. When it first arrived, as a test, I asked it to navigate me to several destinations I knew well. I was pleased to find that the vast majority of the time Tomtom took me along the same route I would have chosen as a “local” - maybe not the most obvious route but probably the smartest route.The price is low but there’s nothing cheap about it. Of course, it doesn’t play mp3s and videos or display my digital photos but I don’t want it to - I have separate devices that do those things better. Cons: Tomtom is a European product and it shows if you want to take advantage of the “Plus” features or additional downloads. Just a few examples: - Getting many of the live on-demand subscription services requires a GPRS (wireless data) enabled cell phone -- much more common in Europe than the US. (If you don’t know what that is, it is 99% likely you don’t have one.) ;- On their web site they have plenty of free suggested scenic driving routes and points-of-interest downloads for the UK and Europe but few if any for the US; and - Premium voices as well as add-on maps and map updates are priced in Euros or Pounds - not such a good thing, given the current exchange rates. (A note on premium “celebrity” voices: Many are impersonators who are just enough off of the original to be annoying, so think and try before you buy.)AgainIn short, in my experience Tomtom does what it says: Right out of the box it will get you where you are going quickly and accurately at a great price. You may want to look somewhere else if you want to take advantage of all the bells and whistles."
