"I never thought I could like anything communist but The Bicycle Teacher opened my eyes; not to the political system but to the people who lived, without choice, with the system. So it was for many people in Eastern Europe who got stcuk behind the Iron Curtain and then tried to survive without being locked away as rebels or resistors.This book offers a fascinating insight into what was everyday life in East Germany in the 1980s. An Australian called Michael Smith narrates his own story of moving to East Germany in 1982. He marries, starts a family, works unknowingly as an informer and becomes involved in the protest movement to bring about reform in the late 80s. He's happy in East Germany and is devastated when the wall falls. That reaction is quite a twist to the standard reaction (everyone celebrating), but you can't help feeling sorry for Smith because his, from his point of view, perfect world has been destroyed.For a different take on the Cold War and east-west relations, get your hands on this book. Once you've started you won't be able to put it down."
