Weighing in at less than 14 ounces, the Raven Pro by Black Diamond is a great multi-purpose snow and glacier tool. With a lightweight aluminum shaft, investment-cast stainless steel head and spike, and excellent bite, it is the ideal axe for an ultra weight-conscious mountaineer.

Investment cast head is "wasp-waisted", affording great comfort under the hand while walking, and providing finger notches for better grip
Gently tapering pick climbs quite well and is excellent in self arrest situations

"This is a great all-around ice axe, that is super light and makes those "I probably won´t need it, and can save weight, so I´ll leave it behind and I should be safe" thoughts at the trailhead irrelevant. If there´s a chance I might need it, I just bring it along as a way to be extra safe with little effort. "It is light, I will give you that, but the light weight and simplicity make it not so ideal for anything but soft snow slogging. If you are using it as a ski axe go small. For general mountaineering, I would rather have something that can actually stick into some ice, this one sure doesnt. But alas, it has served me well for a few years and lots of summits...."
