"Documenting gypsies around Bulgaria the 50D with the 18-200 was the perfect choice. Its really fast and when working the lens composing is fast. I have a spare battery (the best) and a 16 GB card. But in low light this camera really needs a good lens. I use the 50mm 1.4 alot and It gets the job done. I like that the camera is big and heavy. That depends on taste I guess. "I used the 40D for a year, purchased the 50D based on positive user reviews here and at other online merchants, but as soon as I started taking photos with the 50D I noticed it had more noise and was softer than the 40D. Within a few days, people and review sites started posting comparisons and they all showed the same. The 50D does have a much better LCD, does handle colors slightly better, but has more noise..." I like that the camera is big and heavy. That depends on taste I guess.
For actionshooting this camera is fast.
This is my first semi-pro camera and It made it more easy for me to get started and learn the basics. The flash is okay but good idea always to have a piece of paper in the pocket, or in other situations I just deflect the light with my hand (crude technique but It works).
I dont see any need for a batterygrip for this camera. A grip will make It too heavy and theres plenty of shooting in the top battery.
I did a few large prints as well and I have decided to focus on buying good lenses instead of investing in the 5D Mark II.
I recommend the 50D to anyone who are serious about getting into photography.
I dont understand why the 5D comes without flash. In situations with little time the flash on the 50D really comes in handy."

"My wife and I each upgraded from the Canon 20D to the 50D. We shoot a lot of motorcycle racing events and needed higher pixel counts so as to be able to crop more aggressively. The 50D has met out expectations. We like the brighter LCD which allows for better viewing in sunlight. I have read other reviews and some indicated more noise. We have not had this problem."

"Canon really stepped up with this camera. Put the f2.8 70-200 is usm L lens on this camera and enjoy the incredible pictures you will get. I cannot say enough good things about this camera. sell your old camera and buy one. You will not be disappointed. Most of my pictures are of Firefighting activities in low light and undesireable conditions. The 50D is the best camera I have ever owned."

"First of all I am not going to do a pro and con type review. All cameras have compromises but considering the whole package this is the best camera for the money on the market period. I upgraded from the 40D. It may seem from a casual observer's point of view that there is little difference between the two cameras but this is not the case(I read the early reviews by some internet "experts" and really wondered if they even understood the camera as they did not elucidate the new features). The view screen is bigger and has better resolution, the focus is faster and more precise, the ability to both micro adjust your lenses as well as being able to store your micro adjustment settings is a huge feature. While noise level in full Raw is about the same in my side by side comparison the 50D renders a sharper image than the 40D at comparable high ISOs. I have noticed that the SRaw1 feature improves noise. Regardless I have shot images up to 1200 and they are excellent with little noise. It is very important to use good quality glass. Cheap lenses will not utilize the quality of the images that this camera is capable of and remember if your frame of reference is your computer monitor it will not accurately image the detail of the 15mp images generated by this camera. Images are tack sharp and clear. Canon has great color and this camera is no exception. The focus is quick and precise in fact it is so good it will accurately focus in almost total darkness. Build quality is excellent and just like all of my Canon equipment and my 40D it is 100% reliable. The menu is easy to use. Only living with this camera and using it in all types of situations will give you a full appreciation for its capabilities. I do not anticipate upgrading any time in the future."
