"This camera is excellent for almost everything. The only actual "con" is the battery life, but that can be fixed easily by lithium NiCd which are rechargeable. The second con is the shutter lag which is a result of the high resolution pictures. This can be fixed though, certain settings allow you to choose the ISO speed from 200 to 1600. higher ISO means fuzzier pictures. I recommend 800...." Read Full Review »

"Canon put a 12.1 megapixel sensor in this camera. It takes great shots when the lighting is great. It takes good shots when the lighting is good, and it takes poor shots when the lighting is poor. There is a lot of low light grain, and the image stabilizer may or may not be there. How do you know? The red-eye reduction is non-existent even though it has auto red-eye reduction built into the program. I have..." Read Full Review »

"It's great for the rotating LCD, manual controls, image stabilizer, and high resolution. However, Canon also removed the Color Swap and color accent features, along with the My Camera Settings which allowed you to record your own start up sounds and images. Many reviewers have noted how Canon cameras used to be known for their strong metal construction but have recently become very plasticky. This holds true for the A650-everything feels flimsy. However, I can overlook these flaws because of the excellent performance and picture quality. At the end of the day, you will eventually stop using/discard the camera, but the pictures are what you'll keep and what matter. The more I use it, the more I actually come to appreciate the heft in my hand versus my old SD800 is. It takes AA which is good in case you need to replace them on the fly, but unfortunately it takes 4 of them making the camera very heavy."

"I was going to buy a Powershot A710, for it's 6x zoom, and Image Stabilization. Then they came out with the A720 and this 650. I decided to spend the extra $150 for this in order to have the swivel LCD and the extra megapixels. I mostly take pictures of my son doing wakeboard jumps and snowboard jumps. The swivel LCD is good for getting those odd angles. The extra megapixels are also good for being able to crop shots that I've had to take from a distance, and still having enough pixels in the cropped piece to be able to blow it up to an 8x10."

I have a lot of shots that have very serious red eye. This camera also suffers some pretty serious shutter lag too. I would recommend this camera to anyone who shoots landscape photography and doesn't want to carry a full DSLR. Just don't be in a hurry and don't shoot in low light. If you want to shoot people indoors or in low light, this is not the camera to buy for the money you will spend. Also, be kind and gentle with it as it doesn't take getting knocked around well. Being gentle is sometime hard to do as it's only fitted with a wrist strap. This camera is down the middle of the road for the money you will spend.
Expertise: Serious amateur
Problems Encountered: Very poor red-eye reduction and high levels of low light noise.

"This was my third Cannon purchase as I have been so impressed with my previous Cannon PowerShot A710 IS and a Cannon EOS 40D Digital SLR. My primary reason for purchasing this model was the 12.1 megapixel resolution and for the additional battery power it offered over the A710 IS. As we have been preparing for an extended Alaskan Vacation I thought I would back up my D40 with something light and compact yet be able to maintain a High Quality photo. When used in daylight conditions the A650 IS performs about as I would have expected however when used in moderate or low light conditions without the built in flash the results were Grainy and camera was slow to focus. I have been so impressed with the A710 IS in similar conditions that this was even more of a disappointment.
This camera does have many nice features including a 6X Optical Zoom, Optical viewfinder, additional battery power, and a host of easy to use settings that allow you a great deal of flexibility while shooting. Take total control or allow the Camera to do all the adjustments in Auto mode. Much more than the average Point and Shoot but the low light issue was a constant even in auto mode."
