Macro Up Close From A Distance

"My long working distance Macro out of three other Canon Macro lenses. The lens is relatively expensive and heavy, but how could it be anything else and have the feel and the quality output. The 180 is as near to perfection, at its working distance, as is possible to be. Canon has done it again. As they say a picture is worth a thousand words!..." Read Full Review »

Slow Focus - Really Slow Focus

"This lens is great for quality no doubt, however I own a 100mm Macro 2.8 IS lens as well. Because the 100mm focuses much closer than the 180 and much faster, it is a much more practical lens.[...] no doubt the image quality is great and if using only for manual focus macro shooting, a perfect fit. Don't expect to get this if shooting weddings and have any better performance than with the 100mm lens. In fact, ..." Read Full Review »

"This lens is a joy to use, I have used the sigma and tamron versions of the 180 macro lens and the Canon produces the best results. The lens is sharp wide open and produces images with excellent contrast and beautiful colors. If you can afford this lens there is no reason you should bother trying the third party options."

"Can I say Wow again? I had wanted this lens for some time and got it just before I went on a 2 month trip to South Africa where I expected to take lots of macro photos of plants and did just that along with the ME-24 double flash unit. I left behind the 100mm Macro and missed it but learned how to adjust to this lens. Highly recommended for quality macro work."

"I call this lens "The Magnificent" because it is the only adjective that can best describe its excellent optical quality. Besides, its narrow angle of view makes it a true problem solver in that all I need for background, depending on my distance from the subject, is flower with a diameter of no more than 5". Its excellent optic is attributed to inner focus, three UD elements, floating effect and flare-cut diaphragm. This lens is a bit heavy(2.4lbs) because of its solid construction. I purchased it(from B&H) after I read Canon "EF Lens Work II, where this info comes from. This lens does not take just pictures. It produces breathtaking impressionistic paintings. It all depends on its handler. Because I shoot film only, I have no complaints of any kind about it. I do love my EF 180mm f/3.5L USM. What a fell and what a beautiful lens! I will take it to my grave."

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend
