"I bought this to replace a failed WRT54GX2 in a customer's house. The house is huge, but the WRT54GX4 was able to give 4 bars of signal in the farthest reaches of the house. This new Wireless N router gave only 1-2 bars in the farthest places, 3-4 bars one floor directly above it. "Works fine if.
1. DO NOT USE THE SETUP CD to configure it.
2. DO read the manual on the CD.
* RTFM - Read The ''Fine'' Manual *
3. start with a wired connection to PC/Laptop to configure.
4. HTTP to 192.168.1.245 default address.
5. log in user/password admin/admin.
6. change defaults IP address/user/password/Chanel.
7. choose good names and passwords nothing personal to short and never use linksys.
8. use auto Chanel selection to find the Chanel with lowest interference and do not use the. default Chanel 6 everyone does and 11 is usually a bad choice in urban areas.
9. setup security and mac filtering.
10. test wireless connection once you can connect wirelessly turn off SSID broadcast.
11. select a good location.
12. consider the PoE adapter it makes placement easier.
13. to improve coverage on multiple floors add a second unit with a different IP address, device name and chanel.
14. use the same SSID and security settings.
15. more advanced features consider the wap4410n"
"I was so excited to purchase this RE. I was told it was plug and play with my Netgear wireless router. Anything but. Documentation is horrible. Spent an hour with chat center they accomplished nothing and then was told that the line was going down and I had to call customer service. Was told by them that Linksys equipment had to be set up manually with any other brand router. Then was told that they could install remotely but I had to pay them $10.00. I decided not to pay the company additional money to make their brand new product work. BB will have it back tomorrow."
"I saw the other review saying it didn't have the range of his old wireless G, but I thought he was mistaken. Now I know he was right. I can pick up my neighbors wireless G in my shop, but I can't pick up my wireless N. When I first hooked it up it worked for about an hour in the house, and then all of my computers showed no wireless networks available. I can reset it and it works for another hour. Called tech support and the only answer I get is "it must be interference". That's funny, wireless G isn't interfered with. Really a bad buy for almost $200.00."
"I've spent 4 days now on calls to linksys/Cisco about this product. I've upgraded my home office from Comcast 12M internet service to 50M service . This router has a " Known performance issue" and the linksys/Cisco product manager called me this afternoon and explained they are aware of the issue, and that there was NO ETA on the new firmware & software for the 4400N routers. I've used Linksys for years. The attitude, poor customer service and hours spent trying to get an answer about this product has been ridiculous to say the least. Whomever at Linksys/Cisco should be fired for calling this a " Small Business Class product " . Customer service is worse than talking to a wireless phone company."
"I purchased two of these to install in my new house and the one that worked was awsome the other, not so much, as soon as I logged in to configure it I was greeted by a half formed webpage then I refreshed my browser...nothing. The second unit crashed after 3 minutes of uptime, no better than DOA as far as I'm concerned. WARNING: I have used linksys in the past and they had better quality then, now they just keep slacking off more every year, I switched to HP ProCurve and D-Link and never had a problem since. Linksys is a cheap made-in-china junk heap. end of story"
"it was basically plug and play for initial setup and then only a few minutes to do any advance settings."
Pros:
"This is an excellant WAP for the $. Works well through old plaster houses. Mount up high in the central part of the house and will have great signal throughout. Some huge houses might need two WAPs. Some laptops now have N cards built in."
"Far better performance with my existing -g wireless cards. Even with not-optimal placement and with ''low'' signal strength. Not cheap, but a major upgrade."
