"I bought this the Dyson DC17 Vacuum because my 25 year old Kenmore vacuum finally took a dump! I have always heard great things about the Dyson line of vacuums but thought they were a little pricey. Now that I needed one, I really looked into the products out there. This is a closeout model so I got it at a reduced price. I am so glad that I bought a Dyson. "I just got this vacuum online on black friday. It came this evening via UPS so I thought I would try it out. Mind you, I didn't expect much this first time because my husband just shampoo'd the carpet last night with a Rug Doctor because we had our living room emptied out for new furniture that was delivered today. OMG! Even after a fresh shampoo job I couldn't believe it. This vacuum rocks. There is so much fuzz, dust, and crud that came up just from one swipe over the room that I had to do it twice. Could probably go over again and pull up more. I can't wait for my skeptical husband to come home so I can show him what I pulled up in the canister. This was a great deal at $... on black friday but I would pay full price for it if I knew the magic that it performs. A+++!"
"There is a reason the Dyson comes with a 5 year warranty...It dies in 5 years. Overall this has been a great vacum and I recommended to many family members and friends...The suction started to become weak after 4 years and within 5 years it was non existent. For the cost, I would expect more."
"First off, this vaccum's mobility belies its bulky appearance. Once you switch in on it seems to glide by itself. However, if you need to lift it(over stairs for e.g.) or immovable objects, you'll discover how heavy it really is. Beyond that it does a very good job of cleaning, visually carpets look and feel much better. The rotating brush at the bottom has only two modes(on/off). Newer models(dc28 animal) have more options. Still, this does its job well. I've read that the air it emits is far cleaner than that emmitted by any other non-Dyson vaccum, which is a strong(if not always apparent) positive. What you can't see can sometimes hurt you. I believe the other real benefit(which is also not immediately apparent) is its longetivity and strong suction over time. For now, as a new apartment-dwelling buyer(4 weeks) it does a good job, and is not a health hazard(clean emissions)-important especially because we have a baby in the house! This model has more brute force(and cleans 'regular' carpets better) than the more mobile - and more sexy - 'ball' models, a fact not many reviews on the net seem to mention. The downside is its weight, its cost(I got in at a very nice discount), its inability to match the manevourability of the 'ball' models, and its bulky appearance, if appearances count. Emptying the cannister for any 'bag-less' vaccum, including this model is not the easiest of tasks if you're trying to avoid breathing in dust. This impacts the person trying to get rid of the dust, not every other inhabitant in the apartment/house. Dyson's bagless products offer advantages, but in a perfect world, a vaccum with bags certainly makes it easier(and safer) to get rid of dust, once it is picked up by the cleaner. But, so far apparently no 'bagged' cleaners match up to Dyson's ability to pick up dust, while generating clean emissions."
"Just got the Dyson 17 at Sears today. Even though the Rainbow did a good job, I was so tired of lugging out all the parts and pieces, filling the water tank, emptying the water tank, etc...WHAT A HASSLE! Not to mention taking up soooo much room to store it. With the Dyson, It is nice to have everything in one compact unit. The Dyson is so much more convenient. Emptying the dirt canister is easy, although it is a good idea to clean the inner parts with a damp paper towel after use. As far as performance I was very impressed. I had just vaccumed the night before with the Rainbow, and the Dyson picked up alot more per hair and dirt that I didn't know was there that the rainbow evidently missed. Worked great on hardwood surfaces too (which I was skeptical about). It feels extremely solid and durable when using it and almost performs like a self propelled. But so does the Rainbow, it is built like a tank, so I'll give it kudos for that. The Dyson tool storage is very well thought out. The easy reach hose with attachments worked well although the hose tended to give resistance when using it, but I figure that will loosen up with time. I purchased the low reach floor attachment for $50.00 extra but I think I will return it. It was not very user friendly as the hose kept pulling back, and after using it once I realized I really didnt need it. I will just use a swiffer for those hard to reach places on our hardwood. From all the reviews I've read and people I talked to who own Dysons, I expect great things from this sweeper. I will be back a couple years later to give an updated review. P.S. You can't beat the 5 year warranty. Hope this review helps anyone considering this product."
"I purchased one of these just a few days ago however mine does include a few more hand tools than shown on this one. Using it the first time, it filled up immediately. I emptied it and vacuumed the same small area and it filled to 1/2 immediately.
This was after vacuuming with a dirt devil that I had thought worked pretty good..
I've never seen a vacuum with such power. I look forward to vacuuming. Amazing how much dust accumulates on tile and carpet.
I do have a Shet Tzu, and initially thought the fuzz was from him, but after using it several times I don' think it is from the dog. It is an accumulation of years of dust and 'stuff'. I had a kirby years ago, but even it never sucked up like this Dyson. The savings that I'll have on filters for the Dirt Devil will more than pay for this Dyson within a couple of years!
It is a little heavy for me, but well worth the extra effort. Next week I'll be vacuuming everything in this house! LOL It is fun to watch it suck up all the dust. I live in the country, and dust from the dirt drive way has been a real challenge."
"We just got off the phone with Dyson customer service representative and are very displeased at their policy of not allowing retailers to carry Dyson replacement parts. My Dyson DC17 vacuum has a broken belt and is inoperable. When I called around to retailers they told me they do not carry them because they are lifetime warranty and that Dyson will send you one. Sure they will send me a new one , but I now have to wait 7 to 10 days to get it in the mail. Sure it is free, but I have to pay $.... for shipping... I could replace a belt for cheaper than that for other machines and not be inconvenienced to be without a vacuum for over a week. When asked if the shipping could be expedited, their customer service representative quoted your script of, "Dyson only handles one shipping plan". If they are going to make it so a consumer cannot purchase the replacement part at their convenience at a retail store, they should at least give them the opportunity to have the part shipped over night.
Had I known this was their policy when I purchased the machine, I would never have purchased it. I will not purchase another Dyson again once this machine breaks for good. I have used several of their competitor's vacuums and I do not feel their machine is any better than theirs. Plus the fact that I can purchase replacement parts at my convenience for the competitors is much more practical and reliable. Dyson can spout off that their machine is superior to the competitors, but the fact is it does break! And their policy to not allow consumers to easily get a simple belt replacement at their convenience is ridiculous."
"This vacuum is amazing! I bought it on black Friday, and just opened it for Christmas. I wish I wouldn't have waited. I have used a Kirby for about 10 years and have been very happy with it, but recently I had noticed it was not picking up the pet hair like I really wanted. I vacuumed with the Kirby prior to using my dyson just to see if there would be any difference. I was amazed at the amount of dirt and hair that the dyson picked up that my Kirby had missed. Even the carpet looks cleaner and the amount of suction is so great that the unit almost self-propels itself. It is the best vacuum and I will never go back to Kirby. I am a dyson customer for life now."
"I was a long-time Hoover vacuum cleaner user. Other brands/models did not compare to even the least expensive Hoover in my opinion. My daughter talked about the advantages of the Dyson. I continued to be skeptical. My old Hoover broke and couldn't be economically repaired so I started shopping for a new vacuum. I remembered what my daughter had told me about Dysons so I considered those while shopping. I tried the Dyson DC 17 at Sears and was impressed with the suction and the ease of using it. I did not care for the ball so chose one without. The 5-year warranty is exceptional.
After using the Dyson for about a month, I am sold. It does a better job cleaning than any other vacuum I've ever owned. My carpets look new! This model also allows me to turn off the roller/beaters when I vacuum bare floors. This design prevents the vacuum from kicking out small pieces of debris thus making vacuuming easier. With the handle in the upright position, the roller/beaters turn off which is another nice feature. The bagless canister (which I was hesitant about) is easy to empty. Because of allergies, I appreciate the empty from the bottom design. Less dust and dirt seems to fly around. The only thing I would recommend would be building in a carry-handle. So far I have worked around this but I don't think it's probably a good idea to carry the vacuum by the handle since it connects and disconnects to allow vacuuming with the hose. The latch seems a bit fragile to carry the 20 lb weight alone. "
"Prior to buying the DC17, I reviewed all the different models Dyson offers and I came to the conclusion that the ones with the ball dont have as much suction power as the regular ones. Also, we have a short haired dog at our house so, I thought about the animal version of this vacuum but the price was $ more and it didnt seem justifiable. The only difference is the added filter. When I saw the DC17 online for $, I thought it was the best buy. I was about to buy it for the regular price at $. Anyway, the set-up and assembly was easy. I cleared the floors of baby toys and I started to vacuum. I was amazed by how much dirt, hair and other nasty stuff this vacuum was picking up. I just had my carpets cleaned about 6 weeks ago and since then I have vacuumed several times with my old Hoover, Wind Tunnel vacuum. The carpet in the house we are in is 2.5 years old and by now I thought the new shedding a new carpet does was gone by now apparently not, the DC17 pulled out all of that. The canister that comes on the DC17 is a decent size. The carpets were so dirty that I had to empty the canister after every room and twice in the large living room. I read some reviews that the Dyson will die out after 5 years. Im sure that one was Dyson's first model and Im hoping this one will last longer. Just like any electronics, keep them in a non-humid storage and prevent from storing in a high heat environment, treat them well and they should last you a long time."

Now that I needed one, I really looked into the products out there. This is a closeout model so I got it at a reduced price. I am so glad that I bought a Dyson. I have never beena happier with a vacuum. It has picked up stuff that has been in my carpets for a very long time. I didn't realize that my Kenmore was not doing the job at all, even though I thought it was working. The suction on the Dyson is unbeatable.Note: This reviewer may have received a benefit, like a sweepstakes entry or rewards program points, in exchange for writing this review.
