I have a 35mm SLR that I use for weddings, etc., but this is a great camera for the everyday use and the combination of the zoom and the 10 mp has actually outperformed the SLR in some settings. Great Camera If Only It Didn't Have.....

by Tshirt on Aug 25, 2009

★☆☆☆☆

"I would have loved and kept this camera; the pictures were great, the LCD was fabulous in all lights, it had a viewfinder.... unfortunately the video audio was beyond bad. It made anyone who spoke an "s" sound like they had a speech impediment. It was a total deal breaker for me. I work in the music business and was recording my artist on the mainstage at the Philadelphia Folk Festival. His entire set is unusab..."  Read Full Review

Just an Awesome Camera - Great Price

★★★★★
5.0

"This camera was very easy to set up and use. I am still learning how to use all the different things on it. I take pictures of things that I make and sell on the internet. This camera has multiple settings where you can change the MP so that you don't have to crop a lot off to use on the internet. Some of my sites have restrictions as to what size picture you are allowed to upload. I also like that you can take video on this camera. It does a really nice job too. I really like this camera.

One thing that I was looking for is one that had a viewfinder and uses batteries. I didn't want to see the low battery and not be near a computer to charge it. I use batteries meant for cameras and other eletronics and they last a lot longer. I knew that the LCD screen would be a little hard to see in the bright light of the outdoors, that is why I got this one with a viewfinder.

I am very happy with this camera and would buy another one and tell all my friends about it!!"

Canon PowerShot A1000 IS ROCKS

★★★★★
5.0

"I wanted a camera that was easy to use--just point and shoot. I researched digital cameras on the internet and decided on the A1000 IS. I couldn't be happier. Within a few minutes, I was ready to take the first of many photos of my three cats. The quality is absolutely great. I've had the camera for several weeks and I really can't find anything negative to say about it. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a easy to use digital camera."

Camera with a view finder - hard to find

★★★★☆
4.0

"Once you test the photo options and get use to the options the camera is easy to use. They should market the rechargeable batteries needed to keep you going since they don't provide the battery charger with the camera. We had to research information to discover how to solve the problem of short battery life. Batteries that come with the camera die too fast. Recharged batteries last for days - problem solved."

Daughter's first trip away from home.

"Our daughter is doing an internship, at a zoo, in Tyler, Texas, and will be there for the entire summer. We wanted to get her a camera that was easy to carry and easy to use, so she could have photos to remember her trip and of course to be able to e-mail pictures home. The quality of the pictures she sent is superb. She is very happy with the camera and we can't wait to see the photos she sends back home."

Yet another great camera in A* family

★★★★☆
4.0

"I like the A series of camera by Canon. I particularly like their Vivid color mode (in the scene section). A powerful flash makes sure night photographs are great. Canon has improved their camera in last few year and this one is lighter as compared to earlier generation A series. The only problem I have with this camera is their battery compartment which sometimes is not easy to open or close."

"The first camera had a problem with the zoom lens. It would not zoom after the first day of use. Returned it with no problems and received a new camera. The pictures are great even taking great pictures at night. My son took it to China for his semester abroad since it is small enough to put in a pocket. He has had it for about a month."

Very nice product for low price

★★★★☆
4.0

"I use a digital SLR for landscape photography, but when getting together with friends or family, this slim and unobtrusive camera works much better. I enjoy the shirt-pocket size and speedy response from power-up. In Program mode without flash, you can point and shoot in under a second. In Program mode with flash, you can point and shoot in about 3 seconds (the flash REALLY slows things down). It has a nice, 4x zoom that moves pretty quickly, and the autofocus works great in all but the dimmest of light. Battery life is very good with NiMH, and I appreciate Canon using the standard AA size. Video mode works nicely and the large back LCD looks great. I can't see that the Image Stabilization really does much relative to earlier Canon Powershot series that do not have it. Construction is adequate for minor bumps, but is not going to withstand lots of abuse. The flash itself has a limit of about 10 feet, beyond which the subjects are dark. The power and menu buttons are very small and often awkward, but that's apparently the tradeoff for the nice small camera size. My biggest complaint is that after a picture is snapped, the camera "freezes" for ~6 seconds while it processes, that is to say that the fastest you can take pictures is about every 6 seconds (at the highest resolution). For its price, I am happy with this camera. It does everything I need it to do, if not excellently, than at least competently."

    Pros:

  • Easy to use,
  • Great picture quality,
  • Large clear lcd,
  • Speedy without flash

    Cons:

  • Buttons / controls too small,
  • Poor in low light,
  • Slow flash recycle

It's All About Capturing the Smiles
DIGIC III Image Processor with Genuine Canon Face Detection AF/AE/FE/WB sets the focus, exposure, flash and white balance automatically so you always capture the perfect face.

DIGIC III Image Processor
With DIGIC III, your images boast superior quality, the camera operates at top efficiency and battery life is enhanced. What's more, DIGIC III enables Canon's Face Detection, Motion Detection Technologies and Red-eye Correction to give you better, more true-to-life people shots. Simply press the shutter button halfway down, and the camera automatically pinpoints the faces in the scene and chooses the ideal focus point. The camera controls exposure settings and flash to keep every face looking bright and natural. The camera also selects and sets the optimal exposure and ISO settings automatically to keep everything looking sharp and clear. Red-eye Correction can be handled in-camera, in two ways. The Red-eye Correction during shooting uses the Face Detection Technology to recognize and remove red-eye from images as they're taken, before the file is written to the memory card. It's also possible to correct red-eye during image playback, using simple settings in the PowerShot A1000 IS's menu.

iSAPS Technology is an entirely original scene-recognition technology developed for digital cameras by Canon. Using an internal database of thousands of different photos, iSAPS works with the fast DIGIC III Image Processor to improve focus speed and accuracy, as well as exposure and white balance.

DIGIC III features Face Detection technologies, giving you the best possible results in any shooting situation. Face Detection AF/AE sets the focus point and exposure for the faces of your subjects. Face Detection FE adjusts the flash to correctly illuminate your subject to provide the best balance between your subject and the overall scene, eliminating the common problems of over and underexposed faces.

Face Detection WB means the camera concentrates upon faces when calculating white balance for the best possible skin tones. Face Select and Track lets you highlight one face among several in a scene, and the camera concentrates on that person, even as they move around the scene. Face Detection Technology is a powerful contributing factor in Canon's Motion Detection Technology. Simply press the Face Selector Button, then the selected face is double-framed and tracked when the face moves in the frame.

Motion Detection Technology works in the background to instantly evaluate how fast your subject is moving. It automatically selects and sets the optimal exposure and ISO settings to keep everything looking sharp and clear. This feature provides higher ISOs when you need it for action-stopping shutter speeds. But when no movement is detected, it sets lower ISOs for excellent color and detail.

Life doesn't give you second chances to capture special times. That's why the PowerShot A1000 IS features ISO 1600 and High ISO Auto settings that reduce the effects of camera shake and sharpen subjects in low-light situations, giving you greater shooting flexibility.

Red-eye Correction provides three options for removing red-eye from subjects in flash pictures.
1) The Red-eye Correction during shooting actually identifies and corrects red-eye in human subjects as pictures are taken.
2) The A1000 IS can be set to automatically detect and correct red-eye during image playback.
3) You can manually locate any red eyes in a scene during image playback on the LCD screen, and command the camera to remove them.

No Worries, Just Great Pictures
Easy Mode and Easy Playback mode for peace of mind shooting and simplified operation.

When you're taking pictures, the only thing you want to think about is your subject. That's why the PowerShot A1000 IS is equipped with Canon's Easy Mode that works in the background to handle all the technical details for you. Now you can relax and concentrate on choosing just the right angle, capturing the perfect expression, framing your shot perfectly. To make showing off your images just as carefree, the A1000 IS features the new Easy Playback mode that makes viewing single images and slideshows on the camera effortless-even if you're new to digital photography!
