In addition, it is backward compatible to preserve your 802. 11b-based investments, providing a migration path to higher performance networking. Wireless Distribution System (WDS) supplies wireless point-to-point bridging, point-to- multipoint bridging, and repeater functionality for deployment over large areas. Advanced security features include up to 152-bit Wireless Encryption Protocol (WEP) data encryption, Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) , 802. 1x and Virtual Private Network (VPN) pass-through support, and Medium Access Control (MAC) address filtering. NETGEAR ProSafe Wireless Access Point is rated for plenum air spaces. Static 108 Mbps 802. 11g available now. Dynamic version available via future firmware update. In order to achieve 108 Mbps, requires client adapter that supports the same mode. NETGEAR s WAG311 PCI Card, WAG511 PC Card and WG511T PC Card all support 108 Mbps 802. Future firmware upgrade. Includes Wireless Access Point, Two (2) 5 dBi Detachable Antennas, Resource CD, Power adapter, 3 m (10-ft) Ethernet cable, Wall Mounting Kit, Installation guide, Warranty/support information card. Security Complies with industry security standards for wireless data encryption, user authentication, and user authorization. Delivers state-of-the-art WLAN security with 40/64-, 128-, and 152-bit WEP data encryption. WPA provides enhanced, interoperable Wi-Fi IEEE 802. 11b wireless networking security. Includes MAC address authentication with 256-user Access Control List (ACL) and VPN pass-through. WPA and 802. 1x support enables strong mutual authentication to ensure that only legitimate clients associate with corporate RADIUS servers. Management Integrated IEEE 802. 3af-based Power over Ethernet (PoE) support eliminates extra cables and the need to locate near a power outlet, as the access point is powered over the Ethernet cable. Supports Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) MIB I, MIB II, and 802. 11 MIB using SNMP-based network management software, such as HP OpenView. Supports all popular 802. 1x port-based authentication protocols, including Extensible Authentication Protocol (EAP) Transport Layer Security (TLS), Protected EAP (PEAP), and Tunneled TLS (TTLS). Console port facilitates local configuration and monitoring. Users can remotely configure, update, and monitor multiple WG302 foots simultaneously via FTP. Aptitude IEEE 802. 11g wireless standard -- with optional speeds up to 108 Mbps -- takes care of business communications with great dispatch and skill. Delivers Wireless Distribution System (WDS) functionality for point-to- point and point-to-multi-point bridging and repeater modes. A fourth mode enables the WG302 to act as a bridge and access point simultaneously. Dynamic rate shifting guarantees the fastest possible connections. Auto Network Connect keeps users connected to the network even while roaming. Usability Cost effective, simple to install and use. Plenum rated - appropriate for placement above drop-down ceilings and under raised floors. Equipped with convenient Smart Wizard browser-based interface. Fitted with two external, detachable 5 dBi antennas -- obtain NETGEAR s antenna and flexible point placement accessories separately for expanded wireless capacity and range. IEEE 802. 11e-based Quality of Service (QoS) support is available via firmware upgrade. Protected with a NETGEAR 3-year warranty. -- SPECIFICATIONs ---------------------------------------WIRELESS - IEEE 802. 11g 54 Mbps Wireless Access Point Two (2) 5 dBi detachable antennas Typical maximum power output: 19. 8 dBm Typical maximum receive sensitivity: 96 dBCONNECTORs- (1) 10BaseT/100BaseTX/RJ-45 port with Auto Uplink (Auto MDIX) with IEEE 802. 3af Power over Ethernet (PoE) support. "I purchase three of these units, two to bridge between building and one as a wireless access point in one of the buildings. The products work great and are consistent performers.
The main con with the units is the inability to disable client associations when you are using them as bridges. The check box is there but it cannot be changed. I got around this by enabling the Access Control feature and leaving the allowed MAC addresses blank.
Finding out if the bridge has connected properly is also challenging, it doesn't show on the status displays, you have to look in the log at the connection messages.
The other issue is with Power Over Ethernet - the documentation is not clear how you take advantage of this feature. It turns out after I fished around the Netgear site for a while that you can purchase switches what will provide POE but one would think these would be listed in products associated with this Access Point.
Word to the wise. When using these as bridges, config these APs one step at a time and verify the bridge is still connecting after each step, do this BEFORE you install them on-site, it will save you a lot of heartache in the long run."
