"This is the fourth piece from the Oxford collection that I have purchased, and I'm a little underwhelmed. It looks a little cheap. I got the 6-shelf bookcase in black. It came with a few scratches on it, which I filled in with black ink to match the finish. Assembly was simple - I'm a 100 lb girl and I did it myself. "I bought this for my 4 year old son to store all his books and small toys. I purchased the white one and overall I'm very pleased. The pros are that it's sturdy, heavy, and spacious. The cons are that it emits a strong odor, almost rubber like, I'm assuming it's the paint they use. Also, it had a few marks/chips in the paint. I could probably touch it up with some white paint. The finish is very smooth so when my son is putting his books away, the books slip easily and makes the books fall down. He was getting very frustrated with this. I may go buy some contact paper or rubber matting to adhere to the shelf to prevent this from happening. My one minor dissapointment is that the backing of the bookcase is a fairly thin mdf type waferboard. I was hoping the backing would be more solid like the sides and top. Overall, I'm happy with the purchase and it's great for a child's room. Personally, this is something I wouldn't buy for myself.....I would want something a little nicer for my bedroom or living room. My husband said it came very well packed and only took him 5 minutes to put together."
One concerning factor in the quality of the bookcase was that after assembling the top, sides, and bottom, it was really rickety and unstable - it's only the thin backing that holds the entire thing together. It seems stable enough fully assembled, but the loose shelves make a clacking noise when we walk. I have three small tables from the Oxford collection, all of which are great, but the large bookcase is made of the same materials and the wood is the same thickness, despite the fact that it's expected to hold much more weight. Overall, it turned out OK, but I wouldn't buy it again."
"I bought three bookcases from Home Decorators recently-- a tall upright mission bookcase, a shorter double-width mission bookcase, and the 5-shelf 48" Oxford. The Oxford still seems like a decent product in the end, but it wasn't nearly as builder-friendly as the other two cases I bought. First off, the packaging is highly unpleasant-- you'll spend as much time cleaning up tiny styrofoam pellets and cardboard as you spend assembling the bookcase itself. Furthermore, mine arrived with the bottom shelf cracked-- probably a result of the heavy components bashing against each other in the package during shipment; this is a very beefy item-- but thank heavens, the crack was cosmetic (in the trim) and amazingly not structural, and in fact it was bottom-facing and thus not even visible after assembly. Still, not a good start."
"This bookcase was an awesome buy. I am so glad that I finally decided to make the purchase. Like the other reviewer stated, the pre-drilled holes on the back didn't match up (you can't see them when finished anyways). Assembly was very easy. It took me less than an hour-by myself. I ordered the merlot color and it looks terrific against any pale-colored wall. The bookcase itself looks like expensive, heavy wood (which is actually veneer) and I was very pleased! If you are thinking about this product-don't hesitate! I looked EVERYWHERE and this was the best bookcase I could find for the money. It was worth every penny."
"It was a bit confusing to assemble the back of this Oxford bookshelf, but then I realised that the two sides which were sent were the same so that screw holes were not available on the outside except at the
top and bottom. Instead of sending it back, I decided
to assemble as is and use an electric gun to do the
middle screws.
The end result is lovely. I ordered the three shelf bookcase in Merlot which turns out to be a deep cherry finish. The design of the bookcase is beautiful and it is very solid. I would order another one. The case comes in pieces. There is no assembly done beforehand at the warehouse."
"This bookshelf is made of inexpensive materials, but when assembled and filled with books we were pleased with what we got for our money. The design is nice. The inside back is slightly off white and has a white wood strip down the center. It looks ok, especially when in use, but we were a little uncertain when assembling it. If you need a bookcase and aren't prepared to spend money on a significant piece of furniture, the Oxford bookcases will work just fine. We bought 2, and one had an awkward manufacturing. flaw we worked around and turned out not to be a big deal."
"We ran into three problems. First the cam locks were made of a really weak metal so they broke easily while being turned. We broke 4 and had to go to Sears to buy new ones which turned out to be of a superior quality. The right bottom corner notching had to be notched further for a tight fit. The right panel did not come with a complete set of holes for choosing shelf location even though the left panel had a complete set of holes. However, customer service was very nice and gave us reasonable options to resolve our issues."
"This bookcase was an accompanying piece for the set of with which we were furnishing our library. The bookcase matched remarkably well with the other pieces of the collection even though it was part of the second order and was delivered later than the first order and earlier than the second bookcase of the second order. Finish matched the previous pieces well and the slight change in style of this bookcase from the other bookcases within the same collection gives the combination a welcome contrast."
"The bookshelf, like the other Oxford products I've purchased, looks great once assembled. It has a quality appearance and is stable. For some reason, with this order, I got a lot of extra pieces (screws, etc.). Not sure how that happened, but since there was a surplus and not a deficit, I can't complain too much. It took 2 of us about 45 minutes to assemble the shelf moving at a moderate pace. Pretty simple, and all of the pre-drilled holes matched up. Overall, I feel like this was a good value."
