"So as a Canon SLR Owner for many years I have been on the search for the perfect camera that you take when you just cant take the SLR and its baggage. Therefore its the night outs and visits to places where you dont want to lug the gear. Now I would like to say that there is a camera that fits this mark - but there just isnt. "I can't believe this camera gets so many good reviews everywhere. Maybe mine is defective? I am pretty advanced, non-professional SLR user, with a Nikon D80. I bought this as my pocket camera and am just not happy at all with the image quality. It seems that I get some kind of glare in almost every shot I take with it - indoor or outdoor. Even besides this, the quality of the images is just not good. Other thin..." Read Full Review »

Ideally the Lumix LX3 or Canon G10 would fit this space but alas they are both too big to fit in your pocket. So no deal.
Therefore if you look at the compact space you want the following features.
1. best lens possible - bit of an oxymoron for this space but its worth a try!
2. Good noise control
3. fast turn on
4 easy to use controls and software
5. fits in a front or back pocket.
Therefore there are really only a few contenders.
I came down to 2 winners - the Canon 880 and the FX37 from Panasonic.
I chose the Lumix because:
1. the SD 880 from Canon has a wheel in the back that is very easy to turn accidentally
2. The Canon feels more platicky and less solid
3. I had been super impressed with the LX3 from PAnasonic - these guys actually know what takes a better photo and put it in a camera rather than just chasing the megapixel race; so things boaded well for the FX37.
I played with the FX30 (an older model) and was impressed. things were improved on the FX37 and its a good little camera.
The out of the camera JPEGS's could do with a little more colour punch out of the camera but they are pretty good.
Bottom line, if you are in the market for a little premium compact you cant go far wrong with this one!"

"This is my walk-about camera. It easily fits in my pocket, with a bulge about the same size as an iPhone. I bought this camera because of the Leica wide-angle lens. The 25mm is able to capture a lot more than your typical compact camera with a wide angle of 30-35mm. I am fairly pleased with the results that I have gotten so far. The one major downside that I have noticed is that there is an extra beat between the press of the button and when the picture is taken in low-light situations. I found myself having to tell people to hold their poses an extra second when using the flash as many of the initial photos I took turned out blurry when the subjects moved after the first flash, believing the picture to have been taken.
While I may grip about it, this issue is not a deal breaker for this camera. It is still superior, in my mind, to the canon/sony/etc... compact cameras out there.
You can shoot HD (720p) video with this camera, however, an 8GB card only gives you 11 minutes of video. I had never shot HD video and didn't buy this camera to do so, but if I had, I would be pretty disappointed to discover how large those files actually are. This, of course, is not the fault of Panasonic; that is just how large the videos are. However, given that most websites tout this camera ability to shoot in 720p, any potential buyer should understand the limitations that accompany that format.
All in all, a good camera. Suits my needs and looks very similar to the Leica model, with which it shares most of its engineering, for half the price. I'd buy this camera again."

"I recently received this camera as a birthday gift and couldn't be happier! It is a replacement for a Sony camera that I have used for awhile. I have already found that the Lumix takes better pictures, has more functions, and is simply, just a better product. I generally take photos of everyday events...parties, concerts, etc.... and dabble in outdoor scenery shots. I have found that in every situation this camera has had a factory-preset or I have been able to adjust the settings to get a perfect picture. The intelligent auto function also works very well. This camera is great for everyday users and from the other reviews, great for pros looking for something small. I look forward to taking many more great pictures with this camera in the future!"

"I'm a pro photog, normally shoot with a Canon 1Ds Mark III, which is not suitable for lugging around to concerts, parties etc. So I picked up this camera and I couldn't be more happy. I was planning on getting a Canon compact, but once I had a play with this camera, I was sold.
I LOVE -
the compact size and stylish design.
ease of menu use.
HD film quality
image color balance
I don't love -
slight delay between shots (to be expected). lag time is not the greatest."

"My husband has an older model Lumix that I've always loved using for the quality of the photos. I purchased this one for myself specifically for the wide angle lens--I'm in real estate and need to photograph tight spaces frequently. I couldn't be happier with it."
