"I'm giving this camera 3 stars becasue it's not as user friendly as Canon's SD series camera I've come to love and admire.Lumix DMC-LX2 is the same as the Leica D-Lux, except it's hundreds of dollars less and has an additional finger catch on the front. If you're a Canon SD### user, or use a P&S from Nikon, Olympus, Sony... the Lumix is nothing like those. It requires infinetly more setup in order to react lik..." Read Full Review »

"I'm used to lugging around a DSLR and have been shopping for a 'compact' for a long time. I did my research and was concerned about the constant complaints of too much noise and how horrible the Venus engine is at rendering. I decided to take the plunge anyways and have been nothing but impressed with this camera. If you read the manual and do a little research there are more than enough manual adjustments that can be made to compensate for just about anything. The LX3 has recently been announced and this is what I was originally waiting for but am glad I did not. While there are several new functions that LX2 users have been asking for, it seems as if Panasonic has taken a stepbackwards in some key areas; look up the LX3 and you will realize what I mean.
First of all, the build of this camera is second to none. It is obvious why Leica has chosen Panasonic to partner with. The camera has an impressive heft to it, not one of those misleading plasticky feels.
When it comes to performance I am constantly amazed at what this camera IS able to do. For the size and price you get much more out of this camera than you would out of similar offerings. Not a day goes by that I do not come up with a shot that I thought would have been impossible with a semi-compact camera.
Why did I not give this camera 5 stars?
1. Offset tripod mount is annoying
2. Menu is not that intuitive. I can never hand the camera to someone and just say, 'take a picture.' Every time I have to spend a couple of minutes explaining why they shouldn't use the auto setting, what ISO to use, etc. (Don't get me wrong, this is also a good thing, it means that no one but me ever touches the camera!) I don't really mind too much as this gives me the opportunity to expose someone else to what camera's have the ability to do and this is probabaly true about most professional cameras.
3. There is no mount to screw on filters. I purchased an adapter to be able to fit 52mm filters and I highly recommend it. There is somewhat of a cult following for this little camera and you will be surprised at what the addition of a $30.00 adapter will allow you to add to the camera."

It requires infinetly more setup in order to react like a P&S. You must adjust the metering and AF to their most basic levels in order for the camera to adjust in a reasonable ammount of time. Otherwise, it spends no less than 10 seconds adjusting and whatnot. Don't be fooled by "manual focus" either. You can set it to this mode, but there's no focus ring. You have to toggle a little thumb stick up and down to incramentaly change the focus. Also, most P&S camera bags won't fit this camera becuase the lens sticks out farther than most other small cameras. The lens cap is annoying for those used to a self-closing lens cover. The lens doesn't retract all the way into the camera, so sliding it into your pocket is cumbersome. The Camera is beautiful in its off position, but once it's on and the lens extends, it loses some of its charm. All of that said, the images are spectacular. The Leica lens is worth all the hastle. The video is MONEY-- 30fps, full SD resolution. I used some shots I took from a helo in my tv story yesterday and they integrated seamlessly with the video I shot on a $5000 JVD camera. But if you're looking for a camera that takes good pictures and you can slide it in your pocket when you're out and about, this Lumix is not it. Buy the Canon SD products for that. They are the best vacation camera I've ever used. The Canon SD1000 takes awsome pictures, shoots nice video, fits easily in a pocket, has a self-covering, flush-closed lens, and is $150 or less. The Lumix is twice as much, takes money pics and vid, but is complicated and cumbersome to use. I would not buy this camera again simply because I want a camera I can slip in a jeans pocket and shoot on the hike/at the bar/on the beach/on the bike/at the party... You might as well have an SLR if you're going to have the Lumix. If you do get this camera, buy a bag for it, but get the next size up from whatever it says will fit the LX2 because the lens fills the exta room you'd normally use to store an extra battery and SD card. Also, but an extra battery because the giant, beautiful LCD screen drinks up juice.skip the screen protectors becasue the LCD is virtually scratch proof. I've been taking my Lumix out into Iraq with me just tucked into an ammo pouch and it still looks brand new (except for the dust)."

"I have fallen in love with the Panasonic Lumix LX-2. This camera is essentially a Leica D-Lux 3 with a little bit different shell. Same mechanics, same electronics. Same camera. $200 cheaper than a D-Lux 3.
This particular camera is compact, versatile, and very handy. To get the most out of this camera, the very first thing to do is read the manual. There are many features that can be very useful.
It has a pre-programmed setting for food photography, candlelight, action, portrait, fireworks, starry sky, party, beach, aerial photo(for shooting out of airplane windows),snow, high sensitivity (low light)at the beach, scenery and sports. The Lumix LX-2 also has settings to track your vacation photos by time and location. It can also has settings for 2 individual children where it will label their ages, their names and other really neat exif data. There are many settings that can be utilized that make this an exceptional digital point and shoot.
My next suggestion is to get 2 or 3 fast, high volume SDHC memory cards. With a slow card, there is a lag as the image writes. You never know when you'll need a spare card. As a music journalist, I always cary a spare blank card in case someone attempts to confiscate a memory card in one of the night clubs.
The image quality is high end for any digital point and shoot. This is one of the few point and shoots that is capable of shooting in RAW format. This is useful for high end designers and photojournalists.
Side by side with the Leica D-Lux 3, this camera is every bit the equal. It is a Leica. This camera far surpasses any other digital point and shoot camera I have handled.
Excellent pro and casual shooter tool. Excellent buy for the money."

"I have a range of Nikon DSLRs such as the D1x, D70s, D80, and the D200 and im debating which one to get next, the D3 or the D700. I guess you can say im a gearhead. Anyway, i love my nikons and they are great cameras but can be heavy, not too inconspicuous, and aren't always too convenient to carry around with you. Thats where the Lumix comes in, I have this baby wherever I go! I love this lil camera! Its like a dslr other than the fact you cant change lenses on it. The control you have with this camera is amazing and the picture quality is superb! I cant find one thing wrong with it.
I went to Assateague Island to photograph wild horses and took along the lumix and a couple of my nikons (oh and btw, im no slouch on lenses either, i brought a 70-200 2.8 vr, a 17-55 2.8, a 105 2.8 macro, and a 10.5 2.8 fisheye) and after all that was said and done, some of the pictures that were my favorites at the end of the day were from the lumix. It could have been that maybe i didnt do the right things with the nikons, but thats the thing, the lumix took gorgeous pics, effortlessly. Plus running across the sand to get the shot from a certain perspective is alot easier with the lumix than a whole all out set up. I wish there were away to post example pics on these reviews to show what im takling about. (maybe thats something you guys could add b&h? hint hint) Overall, i couldn't recommend this camera more than enough to a friend, his friend, and his friends mother hehe. You will not ever regret owning this masterpiece and the masterpieces it creates."

"I needed a camera that I could take along for vacations; the portability factor was very important, but I also wanted something that had a bit more than the regular point-and-click business. I was recommended the LX2 by a few professional photographer friends of mine. I did look around for others, notably the Canon G7-G9 series, but at the end, in terms of weight, portability and the Leica lens, I shelled out for this one. And I haven't regretted it. It's got a lot of stuff that I figured out -- manual focus, shutter and exposure adjustments, variable aspect ratios et al. I still haven't explored it fully, so I guess there's a whole world out there for me.
Some of the pictures might be a bit grainy though, especially with the digital zoom kicking in now and then, and the anti-shake system isn't the best."
