Pentax K100D Super (Body Only) - Factory Renewed 6.1-megapixel Digital SLR Body Review

"I'm a 30-year Pentax enthusiast/user/pro, so I have a bias FOR this beautiful piece of machinery. Image quality "out of the box" blows away anything else I've used in the price range. Professionally, I have shot Canon EOS digitals, and none was more accurate or nearly so well built.
On the flipside, the menuing system on this thing is a cruel joke played by someone at Pentax -- or else they've never looked at the competition (particularly Canon) menuing systems. Not nearly so intuitive, and Pentax uses some really strange abbreviations and nomenclatures.
Other niggly points:
1) The thru-the-lens flash system is not backward-compatible with earlier Pentax flash systems. I have a top-of-line AF-500-FTZ Pentax flash that is compatible with the *ist-series DSLRs but will not work with this generation.
2) Using earlier manual-focus lenses is possible but it's anything but fast. You have to go through a several-step setup process, and then only a few automatic functions work on the K100D. If you're a serious shooter, you'll need to budget for new, compatible glass -- or resign yourself to missing a lot of shots.
3) Batteries are a pain in the keister. My K100D has rejected three sets of NiMh rechargeables that work just fine in Canon and Fuji bodies. Somewhere I read that this model is really finicky that way.
4) The manual needs another level of English translation. Too often, it reads like a literal word-for-word from the original Japanese. Pentax could do much better -- again, see Canon! And the manual is very disorganized -- lots of 30- and 70-page "jumps" to learn a bit more about the topic you're reading on.
I'm glad I got this camera, and I'd recommend the refurbed unit from OneCall to a friend ... but I'm glad I didn't pay full-new-price for it. Thanks for that, OneCall! Although it's a refurb, I'd never have known it if there had been no sticker on the box!"

"I previously owned a Pentax K100D Super but sold it when I upgraded to a Pentax K200D. The K200D is also an excellent camera value, but I soon regretted selling my K100. I enjoy taking photos at air shows, and really hated having to swap out lenses to go from wide angle to telephoto shots, so I thought, why not look for another K100D to use as a second camera? I found just what I was looking for at One Call and have been very satisfied. I now use the K100D with my Pentax DA 16-45mm f4 lens and the K200D with the Pentax DA 55-300mm and this makes a perfect combo for me!"

"I bought this camera specifically to take photos of my soon-to-be daughter (I'm due in August!). My friends who just had a baby have this camera which they use with the Pentax 50mm/f 1.4 SMFA lens, and I kid you not when I say that EVERY shot they've taken of their son looks like a professional photographer took it. I was blown away by the fast shutter speed of the camera and ability to take photos in low light mixed with the incredible detail of this fixed length lens. Very durable camera that feels good in your hand. Highly recommended, [...]"

"If you're a Pentax traditionalist, you'll like most of the features on this camera. After using it for a couple weeks, I find my gripes focusing on several deficits:
1) Non-intuitive menuing. After using Canon DSLRs for several years, I returned to my Pentax roots -- and discovered how much easier it is to maneuver in Canon's logical, well-designed menus. Plan to spend some SERIOUS time with the manual!
2) Non-compatibility with M-series lenses (some of Pentax's finest older glass), although it's advertised as "compatible with every lens Pentax ever made." If you're purchasing this primarily to use older glass, read the manual first -- it's not universally compatible with all lens series.
3) Non-compatibility with previous "pro" equipment. I have the AF500FTZ flash that was "the" Pentax unit until the *ist series of digitals went obsolete. Then, for some unspecified reason (other than selling lots of new gear, I suppose) Pentax re-engineered the interface -- and my flash system with all its accessories is so much shelf-candy.
Pluses:
1) Uses standard rechargeable AAs -- and they last plumb-near forever.
2) Superb image quality in RAW ... so-so in JPG. Use JPEG for snapshots, RAW for anything you want to keep.
3) Generally well-written manual.
4) Great build quality and "hand-feel." This camera fits a man's hands, with the controls in all the right places!
5) Compatibility with most Pentax lenses.
All in all, a solid "4" at full retail -- and a "7-star wonder" at OneCall.com's price!"

"It's comfortable. It's materials, heft, and ergonomics suggest a build quality that inspires confidence in it's engineering. It's easy operation, control layout, responsiveness, and backward compatibility all conspire to inform the user that not only is the camera well thought out, but that it's part of a system - a design principle(s) - that has stood the test of time. I bought this camera body-only from OneCall (great experience,[...], btw!), and bought an MX manual 35mm w/50mm f1.7 pentax SMC lens. I swap lenses out btwn the two cameras at a whim, and could not be happier. The low light performance when coupled w/that classic, fast 1.7 is a pleasure to shoot. In my experience there is nothing like handling an old, well built piece of glass. And when coupled w/the light sensitivity of the K100D Super's 6.1mp sensor, image quality is shockingly good. I have no experience w/the standard kit lens, and don't really have an urge to get one. I bought an old SMC F series Pentax Zoom and will be using some more old, autofocus glass. Not to say there's anything wrong w/digitally-specific lenses, but i can't use those on the MX, and i find the old lens quality to be superior to newer "affordable" lenses. Overall, I've already shot some really great images on this camera, money well spent!"
