I have another CB I use for DX and mods, and even with all those changes, it took a lot to beat the receive ability this radio comes with stock.
I did disable the Modulation limiter to make it LOUD like a typical base station. It's an easy mod unsoldering the leg of one diode (D204). Even if you don't do this mod, it still has good clean and clear audio even with the stock mike."

"I wanted a Cobra 29, but none were available in my area in time for my road trip, so my sister bought me this as a gift. I wasn't sure about a "radioshack" brand over the Cobra, but WOW it worked great. I used it right out of the box for most of the trip and it was great. Clear, powerful, and easy to follow the directions allowing a first time CB owner to set-up and tune. On my trip I found a CB shop, so I decided to look into what upgrades could be done. For $40 they tripled the power output (which was already strong), added a talk-back feature, and tuned it for peak reception. The CB tech tested it and said it was as good or better than any Cobra 29 he had tuned. He said it was a very good radio, but a little complex to work on compared to the 29. Only downside is that it has a 6-pin mic, so if you want to upgrade to a noise cancelling mic you need a CB tech to wire one for you. Off the self mic won't fit, and none of the standard adapters seemed to work even if they did fit. It worked fine for me without the noise cancelling mic, so I didn't bother."
Pros:
"Mr Hunter said he did not like his radio. I am guessing he didn't know what to do with it, or just does not like the Radio Shack logo. Simple fact is Cobra makes the Radio Shack radio so there is no difference between that radio and it's Cobra equivellant. If your story is true, and I am not convinced it is, your technician does not know about CBs like he claims to and you should not take anything to him. There is nothing wrong with this radio that a little basic knowledge on how to operate it won't fix."
Pros:
"This is an excellent radio for the price. Althouth the Noise Blocking feature is basically useless, overall this is a great radio which replaced a Cobra that i had for 10 years and I decided to try Radio Shack for a change of pace since ive owned all the others, Galaxy,Midland,Uniden,Cobra, etc and I must admit I like this radio, excellent range with my Wilson 1000 antenna both transmitting and receiving and a built in SWR meter which worked well for me. If you get this radio get a Wilson antenna as ive found most Radio Shack antenna's to be very poor."

Cons:
"This was my first CB for my Ford F-150. I originally bought a 2 foot fiberglass whip along with it, and my range was just horrible. I quickly upgraded to a 4 foot Firestick II, and it was like a night and day difference. I got great reception, and transmit was strong. I was getting SWR readings around 1.3. I was happy with this radio, and liked it 1000 times over the Cobra 29-NWST that I got (and promptly returned) after it. Bottom line is this is a great beginner/hobby radio. It was extremely reliable. I would have kept it, but wanted to get sideband, so I have moved on to a Galaxy 959."
Pros:
"First CB radio I have every known. I started new job in trucking industry, so of course needed a CB. Without much thought or any research selected this radio. The Truckers I work with checked it out, and all were impressed. If the said it was solid, its gotta be. Trucker approved!! No need for paying more for a name brand. MGR at radio shack informed me, cobra makes all of radio shacks CB's."
Pros:
Cons:
"The noise blanker is week in the radio. The squelch is not easily set it needs constant adjustment due to noise levels changing due to power lines buildings exc....But the radio is very reliable and has good range. I do wish it just had a plain 4 pin mic on it to be easily changed though. Over all very good radio picks up weather channels very well too."
Pros:
Cons:
"I have this mounted on my 2003 arctic cat 400 atv and i work on in a gravel pit and i get perfect recaption and sound talking with the dump truck drivers even with the atv running and i have daul tiger ants. And i can get out about 10-30 miles away.It also takes a lot of abuse hitting pot holes and i've had it on for about a year and its taken all that abuse. I highly recommand this radio"
Pros:
"I picked this radio up as a temporary replacement when my Cobra needed a repair...I like it so well that it is still in my truck 3 years later.I drive a dump truck that is subject to rough off road use on a regular basis.
The only thing I dislike is the microphone with channel changer...with it being a special mic it makes changing to another more difficult."
